A Celebration of Life honoring Charles Dudley Peters will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Avenue, Shreveport, LA. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Officiating will be Dr. John Sullivan of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Interment will follow immediately afterwards at Forest Park Cemetery on St. Vincent's Avenue.
Charlie was born on December 13, 1945 in Shreveport, LA to Howard Frank Peters and Murrell Searcy Woodall. He grew up under the pastorship of Dr. Tom Pennell at Ingleside Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was presently an active member of Broadmoor Baptist Church.
Charlie graduated from Fair Park High School in 1965 and then attended Northwestern State University. He began working for the Shreveport Police Department in 1967 but was drafted in 1968 by the United States Army. He served for two years primarily on the ground in Viet Nam. He served with the 720th Military Police Battalion escorting convoys and as base operations leader. He also witnessed many of the atrocities of war which he did not like to discuss.
After military service, he returned to work at the Shreveport Police Department and worked his way up to Assistant Chief. He wrote many of the SPD policy and procedure books and in 1974 was primarily responsible for the capture of several bank robbers using a new tracking device developed by the SPD. Subsequently, he was elected Officer of the Year.
Following retirement in 1991, he worked at Horseshoe Casino as Risk Manager and Security Supervisor for eleven years. When Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana, he went to work as a Special Agent for the National Insurance Crime Bureau and assisted in the recovery of many lost, damaged or stolen vehicles in South Louisiana. Before retirement, he helped to initiate the Bait Car Program in Shreveport to assist in the recovery of stolen cars.
Charlie was a member of many Masonic and Shriner organizations including Master of Joppa Lodge 362, Potentate of El Karubah Shrine Temple, Commander of Legion of Honor, President of South Central Shrine Association, and President of Sojourners.
Charlie loved family activities and fishing for bass, trout, and redfish. But his greatest love by far was Bible Study and Discipleship and worshiping his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His children fondly remember their father as always patient, kind, and soft spoken - a gentle man.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Karen Peters; granddaughter, Alexis Peters; sister, Betty Rankins and her husband, Clyde Rankins Sr.; and sister-in-law, Claudia McGowan.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Carol Goldstein Allen Peters; brother, Ed McGowan of Shreveport, LA; daughter, Kimberley Michelle Peters and Kelli Park of Mountain Home, AR; sons, Bryan Christopher Peters of Baton Rouge, LA and Charles Thomas Peters and Joanna Peters of Ruston, LA; grandchildren, Ari Peters of Portland, OR, Thor Peters of Mountain Home, AR, Matthew and Julia Peters of Baton Rouge, LA, Briton Whitfield of Tyler, TX; and great-granddaughter, Harper Peters of Baton Rouge, LA.
His bonus children are Don and Pamela Allen Crook of Shreveport, LA and Robert and Christy Allen Basco of Dallas, TX; bonus grandchildren are Joshua and Madison Crook of Fayetteville, AR; Mark and Ashley Crook Taylor of Shreveport, LA, and Matthew Basco, Thomas Basco and Casey Basco all of Dallas, TX.
The family would like to thank the United States Army for providing military honors and the Shreveport Police Department for providing pallbearers and escorts for his services. A special thanks to Captain Janice Dailey, SPD, for all of her assistance.
In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, (3100 Samford Avenue, Shreveport); Broadmoor Baptist Church, (4110 Youree Drive, Shreveport 71105) or the charity of your choice.

My dad, George Gray, was active in the Masons and Shriners, which is where my parents met Carol and Charlie Peters.

Once a month they went to dinner for a Sojourners meeting.

My parents always considered them great friends. After my dad passed away in 2018, my mom (Helen Lee Gray), appreciated the support from Charlie and Carol.

My mom has since passed away (2022), and the Gray family remember Charlie and Carol fondly.

With sympathy, Patricia Gray
(Daughter of George and Helen Gray).
