It is with deep sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of (Charles) Jay Pottmeyer, 59 of Churchtown, after an accident at his home. Jay was born February 19, 1965 in Marietta to Robert and Elizabeth O'Linn Pottmeyer. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who had the privilege to know him.
Jay attended St. John Central Catholic School, Fort Frye High School, and DeVry Institute of Technology where he developed his interest and skill for electronics. He was a family man above all things but was also a successful business owner. Jay started his career in 1985 at EDI in Marietta as a circuit board builder, later becoming co-owner until his retirement in 2020. He also founded PPC Oil and Gas in 1999 with his close friend, Curt Loken. Jay had many hobbies including gardening, camping, boating, Jeep riding, and making homemade wine, where he just recently began growing a vineyard with his son-in-law. He loved watching Ohio State sports in his infamous Buckeye room and looked forward to his yearly beach vacation with close family and friends. Jay was a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Beverly Knights of Columbus and a big supporter of 4-H, where his children and grandchildren were very active. He was also a member of the Beverly Eagles, Southeast Ohio Oil and Gas (SOOGA), and Ohio Oil and Gas Association.
Jay is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 37 years, Marilyn Smith Pottmeyer, children, Johanna (Nate) McNabb, Cole (Alison) Pottmeyer and Tanner (Amie) Pottmeyer, and precious grandchildren, Addisyn, Willow, Evelynne, Claire, Dayne, Gage and Lennox. Of all the roles he played in life, Pappy was his favorite. He loved being with his grandchildren and would drop anything to spend time with them. Jay was especially loved by his siblings, Ken (Cindy), Chris, Ted (Karen), Eric (Marilyn), Erin (Sherri), Trina (Ted), Dennis (Carla), Laurene (Doug), and Kim (Dave) and close family friend Curt (Sharon) Loken, as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl and JoAnn Smith and sisters-in-law, Joyce (Tom) Danford, Nancy (Brian) Bauerbach, Earlene (Gene) Watson. Jay was blessed with an abundance of nieces and nephews and loved them and their children with his whole heart. He is also survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends who he loved being around.
Jay will be greeted in Heaven with open arms by his parents, his infant brother Francis, brother Dave, and his grandparents Walter and Ada Bules O'Linn and Ralph Sr. and Helen Huck Pottmeyer.
Family will welcome visitors on August 23, 2024 from 2-4 and 6-8 Friday at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home where a Vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.
