Mr. Charles Marion Smith, age 82, of Tallapoosa, GA, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family on August 20, 2025. He was born November 28, 1942 in Cleburne County, Alabama to the late Charles W. Smith and Eunice McElroy Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Barbara Brown, Norman Smith, and Donnie Smith.

Charles lived his first few years with his McElroy family in Alabama, but moved to Atlanta at the age of 4, when his father returned home from World War II. At 14 years old he joined the Custer Avenue Baptist Church, becoming a lifelong Christian. He later followed in his father's footsteps and joined the United States Army. He served in Germany as a radio operator. Not long after his return home, he married his beloved Nancy and moved to her homeplace in the Buncombe community. He worked for Douglas and Lomason for over 33 years, until they closed in 2000. He was an avid Braves fan, volunteered for the Buncombe Fire Department and the local Boy Scout Troup #123, and was a devoted member of Kansas Baptist Church. When his children were little he enjoyed taking them fishing and in retirement he enjoyed taking his grandchildren to play golf and eat at the Georgia Diner. Up until a few months ago, he and Nancy happily spent their days caring for their great grandchildren. Charles was a loving husband, father, and PopPop and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Nancy Patterson Smith; daughter, Julie "BJ" Smith; sons and daughters in law, Mitchell and Camille Smith and Andrew and Gwen Smith, all of Tallapoosa; grandchildren, Brandon Newborn, Adam Watson, Avery Smith, Caitlynne Fincher, and Brady Smith; great grandchildren, Jake Newborn, Raelynn Newborn, Riverleigh Smith, and Ellison Fincher; brother in law and sister in law, Stan and Becky Driver, of Waynesboro, GA; sisters in law, Marla Smith, of Fayetteville, GA, Beth Smith, of Locust Grove, GA, and Linda Joy Patterson, of Fuquay Varina, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 24, 2025 at 2:00PM at Kansas Baptist Church with Rev. Josh Boatright and Rev. Randal Eidson officiating. Gentlemen serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Newborn, Adam Watson, Avery Smith, Brady Smith, Brandon Fincher, and Jake Newborn. Caitlynne Fincher will serve as an honorary pallbearer. Interment will follow in Kansas Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Mike Casey officiating and the Haralson County Veterans Association providing military honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, August 23rd, from 5:00 to 8:00PM.
