Charles Edgar (Ed) Snyder, 91, of Mercersburg, PA, passed away on October 21, 2024 in Berlin, MD.
Born July 19,1933 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late John T. Snyder and Anna K. Fallon.
Charles graduated from the Mercersburg Academy in 1951. He went on to attend Penn State University where he was a midfielder on the 1954 NCAA National Championship soccer team. He graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Charles started working for the Frick Company in Waynesboro before entering the United States Navy. He later worked as a mechanical engineer at Grove Manufacturing in the Firetruck Aerial Ladder Division. Years later, Charles earned a Master's Degree in teaching from Shippensburg University and spent the rest of his career pursuing his passion of teaching science at James Buchanan Middle School. Many students will fondly remember him for using a dunking bird to demonstrate scientific principles. He was also the coach of the boys soccer team at James Buchanan High School, in Mercersburg, PA.
Charles was an avid model toy train collector, a hobby he loved sharing with his grandson Zachary.
He was a life member of the Rescue Hose Company No. 1, Inc. in Greencastle. In 1977, he became the Fire Chief of the M.M.P.& W. Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Company 9, Mercersburg. Charles also served as a volunteer firefighter in Waynesboro. He enjoyed passing on his knowledge as a Pennsylvania State Fire Instructor. He was a member of the Mercersburg and Greencastle Presbyterian Church.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn B. Snyder in 2022.
Charles is survived by his two children, Laura Jean (Stephen) Piper, Stephen (Mary) Snyder, a grandson, Zachary Snyder, and a sister Anna Belle (Ed) Meyers.
A private service will be held.
