Charles Edward Turner, affectionately known as "Dink" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, in his hometown of Columbus, Indiana. Born on October 9, 1946, to James Arthur and Ruby Hacker Turner.
Dink's journey through life was marked by his unwavering patriotism and dedication to his country. He proudly served in the United States Army for 22 years and 9 months, retiring as a Sergeant First Class. His military career was distinguished by his commitment and valor, taking him to far-flung destinations such as Korea, Germany, Panama, Honduras, and through three tours in Vietnam. His service to the nation was a source of immense pride, and he carried the lessons of discipline and camaraderie throughout his life.
After his honorable discharge, Dink channeled his passion into working on cars, a skill that he both enjoyed and excelled at. His hands were rarely clean, always tinkering with an engine or offering to help a friend in need. His love for movies and music filled his home with joy and laughter, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all who visited.
Dink will be remembered not only for his actions but also for his words. His favorite saying, "All gave some, some gave all, though we may not know them all, we owe them all," echoed his deep respect for his fellow servicemen. It was a phrase that encapsulated his philosophy of life, recognizing the sacrifices made by so many for the freedoms enjoyed by all.
Those who knew Dink would describe him as a man of courage, always ready for a new adventure and never one to shy away from a challenge. His adventurous spirit was contagious, inspiring others to explore, to learn, and to live fully.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Noralhee B. Gaudia Turner; Children, David Whitehead, Stacy Carman, Douglas Edward Turner; Siblings, Ron Taylor, David Taylor, Carl Turner, Patty Osborne, along with many generations of grandchildren.
Dink was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Nita Lintz, and siblings, Larry Taylor, Jim Turner, Corrine Duckworth, and Pauline Elam.
Services for Dink will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Jewell Rittman Family Funeral Home with Rick White officiating. A time of gathering of friends will be from 9:30 until service time. Burial will take place at Garland Brook Cemetery in the Veterans Section. Military honors will be provided by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
