Charles Eugene Waldrop (Charlie), 78, of Madison, MS, passed away on Fri. Aug. 9, 2024 at The Madison Nursing & Rehab Center in Madison, MS.Charlie was born on September 27th, 1945, in Greenville, Mississippi, to James Newton Waldrop, Jr. and Wilma Cothran Waldrop. He attended Indianola High School and graduated in 1963. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army National Guard where he served for six years. He also attended the University of Southern Mississippi and graduated in 1968. He married Sharon Elaine Little Waldrop on February 27, 1966 and they had two children, Karen and Marc.
Charlie worked as a Life Insurance Underwriter at Southern Farm Bureau, Andrew Jackson Life, Southand Life, and New York Life before retiring in 2011.Charlie was a lifelong diehard sports fan. He loved playing and following baseball from a very early age. As a child he was a huge New York Yankee fan and Mickey Mantle was his hero. In 1992, he moved to Georgia and became a diehard Atlanta Braves fan. He also loved watching his Southern Miss Golden Eagles compete in football, basketball, and baseball. Charlie played baseball competitively from childhood through junior college. He also played basketball, tennis, softball, and golf throughout his life. He developed a deep love of golf as an adult which continued throughout the remainder of his life. Charlie was a faithful Christian, worshipping and serving in multiple Church of Christ congregations throughout his life. He also faithfully served as an elder, deacon, and bible class teacher for many years. Charlie most recently worshipped at North Brandon Church of Christ in Brandon, MS. He modeled Christ in his daily life, setting an example for others and is directly or indirectly responsible for leading many souls to Christ, including his own wife, children, and grandchildren.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, James Newton Waldrop, Jr. and Wilma Cothran Waldrop.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sharon Waldrop; daughter, Karen Wallace (Chris) of , Carthage, MS; son, Marc Waldrop (Kelli) of Kennesaw, GA; sister, Jimmie Dean Tupman, of Kingwood, TX; grandchildren, Zach Wallace (Ashlee) of Oxford, MS, Madi McFarland (Josh) of Madison, MS, Kendall Burton (Zakk) of Kennesaw, GA, and Grayson Wallace of Carthage, MS; great grandchildren, Cooper Wallace of Oxford, MS and Graham McFarland of Madison, MS.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 12, 2024 from 10am-11am at North Brandon Church of Christ in Brandon, MS. Funeral Services are at 11am on Monday, Aug. 12, 2024 at North Brandon Church of Christ with a 2:30pm graveside service to follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City, MS.
