Charles served 21 years in the United States Army where he received many awards to include: Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. On December 9, 1988, he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class (E7).
