Charlotte May Shelton was born October 11, 1941, in Denver, Colorado, to Frederick Charles Root and Opal Sophonia (Sala) Root. She grew up a small-town girl in Platteville, Colorado, where she learned the value of hard work and family. Charlotte graduated from Mapleton High School, where she was a proud baton twirler and made friends that lasted a lifetime. She married Dale Ray Shelton on April 19, 1964, and together they had a son, Dale Ray Jr.
After high school, she went on to business school and put her skills to work at Farmers Insurance and later in the credit department at Sears. She took pride in doing a job right and giving her best.
Charlotte loved painting ceramics, tending to her rose bushes, and hitting the lanes for a good game of bowling. She was happiest when she was shopping for her son and grandkids-especially when there was a clearance rack involved. Nobody could find a deal like Charlotte.
She had a strong faith and spent many Sundays at Denver Church of God and later at Nixa Assembly of God, where she found community and comfort.
Charlotte is survived by her son Dale (Kimberly) Shelton; grandchildren Levi Charles Shelton (Kaylea Dawn) and Abbie Rae-Ann Melton (Joshua); great grandchildren; Sophia, Aubrie, Leo, Walker, Sadie, and Archer ranging in ages from 8 months to 5 years; and sister Wilma Sharon Castillo; nieces Deana Marie Castillo, Denett Rachel Kennedy and many other great nieces and nephews.
Charlotte is preceded in death by her loving husband Dale Ray Shelton, sister Elizabeth Root, brother-in-law- John Castillo, and niece Dawn Renea Castillo.
A visitation will be held at Meadors Funeral Home in Republic on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will be at Meadors Funeral Home in Republic on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 1:00pm with burial at Brookline Cemetery following the funeral service.
