It is with the heaviest of hearts that we inform you of the passing of Charma L. Mortimore. Born July 7th, 1945 in Greensburg, Pennsylvania she passed surrounded by love in York Hospital on March 10th, 2025 at the age of 79. She was a 1963 graduate from Gateway High School in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, and studied at Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she met her first husband, the late Denny Zeigler. She spent multiple decades working in customer service for Carlisle SynTec, where she was introduced to the love of her life, and future husband of almost 36 years. She is survived by her spouse, Randal Mortimore, her brother Jay Lehman, her two children, Shawn Austin and her husband Scott, Lance Zeigler and his wife Basia, and six grandchildren; Spencer, Sierra, and Sophia Austin, and Logan, Bianca, and Isabella Zeigler. She was the daughter of the late Betty Louise and John Robert Lehman.
Charma was a woman of indomitable spirit, perpetually infectious smile, effervescent laughter, and limitless love. This extended to friends, family, and strangers alike. Anyone whom was lucky enough to have crossed her path felt the grandiose impact of her ripples. When she met you, she added you to her collection of cherished individuals, and this was not up for debate. Over the years, she dedicated herself to the community around her. Volunteering her time and connecting with others, not only as a local poll worker for the elections, but also in service of the next generations at Aldersgate Preschool, York Township Elementary, and most recently, Hayshire Elementary.
Charma had many approaches to life. Everything was always an adventure (especially when left and right were permanently interchangeable), time for spontaneity was always on her watch, good books were only a day or two from being consumed, and she never failed to look at the bright side of even the gloomiest of circumstances. She liked her pool water warmer than bath water, her cream with a little coffee, her dessert always before dinner, her communication without blasphemes or expletives, and her nightly jeopardy uninterrupted. She cheered hard at all sporting events, particularly when watching her grandchildren compete, and celebrated all things Pittsburgh, Penn State, and Pitt.
Her mantra towards the end of her life, battling congestive heart failure, was "either way, I win." That is exactly what she did. Nurses, doctors, and medical staff alike, to whom we would like to offer our greatest gratitude, were not wrong to perceive the unquantifiable influx and efflux of love emitted from those in her midst. While the source of this radiant spirit is no longer with us, the lessons derived from time in her presence is everlasting.
Cremation services will be provided by Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. of East York.
A celebration of life will be held at The Barn at Creek's Bend-more details to come.
