Cherry Lynn Tredway, age 86, of
Oklahoma City, OK, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 17, 2025. She passed away peacefully at St. Ann's Skilled Nursing & Therapy in Oklahoma City.
Cherry was born on February 22, 1939, in Clinton, OK, to Marvin and Alice Pyron. After the family moved to Midwest City, her father died of a heart attack in August of 1948. Her widowed mother moved Cherry and her two young sons-Mark and Rob-to Stillwater to complete her degree at Oklahoma State University. Over the next seven years, she moved the family to Stratford, McLoud, and Stigler where she taught Home Economics in each of those high schools. Even while Cherry cared for her brothers, she made good friends and fond memories in each town and graduated from Stigler High School in 1957.
As a college freshman, Cherry attended Central Christian College in Bartlesville. She then transferred to Oklahoma State University where she graduated in 1961 with a degree in Home Economics. Going to OSU turned out to be a good decision because there she fell in love with Richard Tredway, whom she had met at a youth service in Muskogee the summer before. After Richard invited her on their first date to a Benny Goodman concert, they dated for 10 more months and were married on August 29, 1959. Together they shared 66 wonderful years of marriage. They were blessed with two sons: Tory and Tyler.
During the 1960's and 70's while Tory and Tyler were growing up, Cherry volunteered her time and talents. For example, she served as the preschool supervisor at the Wilshire Church of Christ for seven years. Another example of her servant spirit included her work with the Oklahoma Christian College Women's Association. Her key accomplishments with this active group included developing and editing a cookbook sold to raise funds for the college. She also served as the Association's President in the mid-1970's.
Her devotion to supporting the College opened the door for Dr. Bailey McBride to ask her to consider joining the faculty in 1976. After much prayer, she accepted that invitation and served on the faculty at Oklahoma Christian University for the next 26 years (1976 to 2002). When first hired, she taught courses in Home Economics. As that program was phased out, she began developing the OC Interior Design program and taught most of those courses.
While teaching at OC, she earned two Master's degrees from Central State University-MEd in 1978 and MS in 1984. She earned her PhD in Human and Environmental Sciences from Oklahoma State University in 1992. Additionally, she was named Outstanding Alumnus by the Stillwater Church of Christ in 1981.
Several key traits describe Cherry. She was a servant leader. She was known for her organizational skills. Her kind spirit was evident to all who knew her. She was a phenomenal cook and accomplished seamstress.
Above all, Cherry loved the Lord with all her heart and lived a life that reflected her faith and generous heart. She used her spiritual gifts for Kingdom purposes. Her prayer life was strong. She filled her Bible with underlined verses and notes. She faithfully persevered in her commitment to the Lord.
Cherry is survived by her devoted husband Richard; her sons and daughters-in-law Tory and Kim Tredway; and Tyler and Jennifer Tredway. Her grandchildren include Brooke, Bryant, and Brittney Luna, and Austin and Caroline Tredway; as well as Rachel and Zac Crenshaw, and Hannah, Quincy, and Margaret Tredway.
She was preceded in death by her father Marvin Pyron, mother Alice Pyron, and two brothers, Mark and Rob Pyron.
A celebration of Cherry's life will be held on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 11:00am at Buchanan Funeral Service (8712 N Council Rd.,
Oklahoma City, OK). Visitation will take place prior to the service from 9:00-11:00am at the same location. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Cherry to the OC interior design program. This nationally recognized program, which Cherry was instrumental in founding and developing, has been renamed Interior Architecture at OC.
