Dengel & Son Mortuary - Ottawa ChapelCheryl K. (Latimer) Black, our beloved wife, mom and her very favorite title, Granny, as she was affectionately known as by so many went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 10, 2025 surrounded by her family after a very short battle with cancer.
She was born November 23, 1953 to Ralph and Areta (Cramer) Latimer. As a young girl she spent all the time that she could out at her grandparents’ farm enjoying the outdoors and farm life. Her home was in the city, but her heart has always been in the country.
Cheryl was a lifelong Franklin County resident and graduated with the Ottawa High School class of 1971. On April 6, 1973 she married her high school sweetheart, Lyle Black, where she joined him on the family farm and was truly happiest. They shared 52 ½ years of love and devotion. Three children joined their family; Angie, Betsy and Casey. Cheryl was the absolute best wife and mother, always helping and supporting the family in every aspect, from farm work to being the kids’ grade school room mother where she never missed a field trip. She was always cheering on her favorite teams-the ones her kids were on and the Kansas City Chiefs. She did it all and often outworked all of us.
Along with the work on the farm, she worked at Budges Hardware, Town & Country Supply, and also worked at D and L Automotive Electric with Lyle for over 40 years.
When she could find the time, she loved to go horseback riding, camping, and reading books.
She leaves behind her husband Lyle, daughters Angie (Jay) Hook and Betsy (Jason) Hedges, and son Casey (Beth) Black, her grandchildren Audrey, Addison (Lindsey), Evelyn and Jacelyn, her brother Steve Latimer, brother-in-law Larry (Jeanne) Black and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is proceeded in death by her parents Ralph and Areta Latimer, her in-laws Freddie and Jean Black and grandchildren Ellie and Eli Black.
She had a quiet faith, but her love of the Lord was strong. She will be missed by all of us who knew and loved her, but we are happy that she has crossed the finish line and know that she is now in the arms of Jesus. We will carry the memories created with her in our hearts forever.
Family will greet friends 6:00-8:00pm, Thursday, November 20, 2025 at Dengel & Son Mortuary, Ottawa. Memorial services will be held 2:00pm, Friday, November 21, 2025 at the same location. Inurnment will follow at Wellsville cemetery, Wellsville, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Spoon Creek Inc where she has volunteered for more than 25 years at a weekly Rodeo Bible Camp helping teach kids the sport of rodeo, but most importantly lead them to a better relationship with Jesus. Another option for donation would be the University of Kansas Health System Hospice who were so wonderful to Mom in her last few days. Memorial contributions may be sent in c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
