Cheryl Jean Sonntag-Hurt
Born, 12-7-46 in
Parsons, Ks. To Wilbur Benton Talbot, & Rosanna Mae Beck. Cheryl was raised with her older sister, Patty by her grandparents Ben & Cora Beck. Her cousins David & Arla Lee Kerley were always close by. Cheryl attended Parsons Schools. She was a drum majorette in high school & enjoyed choir. Cheryl was high school sweethearts with her husband, Richard E. Shepard. He passed of jaw cancer at 21 years of age, with Cheryl by his side. Cheryl was always full of determination and nothing stopped her from moving forward with her baby girl, Pam who was 2 ½. She attended Parsons Juco and received an Associate's degree in business.
Pam & Cheryl fell in love with Steven E. Hurt they married him on August 16th, 1968. They had Brian in 1970. Steve & Cheryl Hurt were married 10 years. She later was married to Rick Sonntag on Sept. 19, 1988. They shared a wonderful 25 years together. They went on a vacation of a lifetime to Hawaii. Mom loved it & spoke of it often. She was lost without Rick. They did everything together.
Her final love was Mr. Jackie Rule. He is so kind and patient. Mom called him "her Jack". They loved each other and he took amazing care of her for over 15 years.
Cheryl was the Classified Ads Manager at the Parsons Sun. She worked at the Parsons State Hospital. Her lifelong career was Real Estate. She started selling real estate with Howard Johnson in the 1970s. She went on to be a real estate broker. She worked with Teresa Karleskint and they took Parsons by storm. She owned Hurt Real Estate & later Cheryl Snead Real Estate Selling in Parsons, Oswego & everywhere in between.
Cheryl & Rick moved to the KC area in 1989. She managed Sterling 24 Apartments, Pheasant Run Apartments & Attic Storage.
Preceded in death by her Grandparents, Parents, Richard Shepard, Steve Hurt, Rick Sonntag, & Granddaughter Karlee Sonntag.
Survived by: Pam Hurt, (wife) Lisa McLarty Utah, Brian Hurt, (wife) Betty Dennis, Ks. Shawn Sonntag , Dawn Bump Lake of the Ozarks. Sister Patricia & Richard Thurlo Altamont, Ks, Debie & Denny Rash Olathe, Ks, brother Bob & Debbie Talbot Ft Scott, Ks, Rebecca Frank Olathe, Ks. Grandkids Cassie Hurt-McLarty, Seth Blackburn, Vanessa ( Ron) Shrauger, Breonna Hurt, Eli Blackburn, Tristan Hurt, Mia Hurt, Xander Hurt, Braydyn Hurt, Deseret Hurt, Mark
Hull, Dallon Bump, Dillon Bump, Amber Lehmann, & several great grandkids. A vast amount of nieces & nephews, and great nieces & great nephews.
Her hobbies included: Live theater, bowling, doing puzzles, dancing, & watching reality TV. But, most of all, loving on her grandkids. She always enjoyed attending the kids and grandkids sporting, and activities. She was all about family and making sure everyone got along.
Cheryl always loved watching the Chiefs. She said, "Because when they played she always knew where her family was, and it felt like we were all together."
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Monday, October 6, 2025 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with Pastor Claude Shue officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the
American Lung Association or to the
