Christine Comstock Obituary
Christine Holaday Comstock died peacefully at home January 19, 2025 surrounded by family, at the age of 80.
She made the world a brighter place. She made the world a better place. She loved and is loved.
Chris was born to Mary Ann (nee Holaday) and William Comstock on September 5, 1944 at Women's Hospital in Detroit.
She grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan, the source of her lifelong love of the water and sailing. Her greatest joy was time with her family and friends at the lake. Happiness was a pontoon boat full of family, Chris at the helm, with a little one on her lap "steering." She loved to travel and was a voracious reader of biographies, history, and women's studies. She enjoyed playing the piano and the ukelele.
She had a big heart, keeping up with friends and family and easily befriending new acquaintances. Bob would introduce her to a colleague from work and in ten minutes she knew more about the colleague than Bob had learned in five years. She connected to people in a warm, caring, and kind way.
She was an outspoken and strong willed advocate for women, and mentored many young female physicians, recounting her approach to balancing family and career. Her advocacy may have started in kindergarten when she pushed a boy into the reflecting pool for calling her a name.
She was an adventuresome traveler, taking her young family camping on the Siberian coast and rescuing young David from the security guards at the British Museum when he tried to mount the Rosetta Stone. Travels included camping in the cute but unreliable VW camper, Van Hilda. She patiently travelled with Bob for his car racing hobby despite her dislike of the noise, fumes, and remote corn fields.
She loved to shop, but only for others. Every CVS, Shell station, or Target was a chance to find something for the grandkids or a friend. Her memory of details of friends' families was impressive. On a trip, Chris often found a unique gift, "Remember Helen's grandchild Jimmy loves dinosaurs; we should get this Whatsitsaurus for him." Amazon's stock price fell on news of her passing.
She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan and attended medical school at the University of Chicago on a full scholarship. She was board certified in both Radiology and Obstetrics and Gynecology and was the Director of Fetal Imaging at William Beaumont Hospital from 1984 until her retirement in 2011. She did landmark research on the placenta, the fetal heart and fetal brain. She published 94 peer reviewed articles and held leadership positions in medical organizations. She held the position of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan, Wayne State, and Oakland Universities.
Her courage and grace facing the diagnosis of an incurable brain tumor in 2020 was an inspiration to all.
She was predeceased by her brother Seth and will be dearly missed by her husband of 51 years, Bob Lorenz, her brother Justin (Marie), her sons Andrew (Edna) and David (Khira), and grandchildren Christine, Craig, Delilah, Joseph, Olivia, Sam, and Seth.
She made the world a brighter place. She made the world a better place. She loved and is loved.
