Graveside services for Lavon Webb, 90, of Portales, will be held at 10:00 AM, Sat., Sept. 23, 2023 in the Elida Cemetery with A.P. Martin officiating. All her family members will be honorary pallbearers.
Christine Lavon Webb, known to virtually everyone as Lavon, was born Nov. 26 1932 in Elida, NM to the home of Dora Blanche (Miller) and Stephen Rhea Thurman and passed from this life on the morning of Sept. 21, 2023 in Portales. Lavon was a cheerleader for the Elida High School, and graduated in 1950. After high school, she went on to attend Draughn's Business College. After finishing her course of studies, she returned to work at Cannon Air Force Base. In 1956, she accepted a position at El Paso Gathering in Odessa, TX, where she was employed until 1972. On Oct. 5, 1972, in Odessa, TX, she was married to William Bruce Webb. After they were married, the couple made their home in Clyde, TX, where she was employed as a secretary for Texas Pacific Oil and Coal until her retirement in 2000. In 2003, she and Bill moved to Portales to make their home.
For several years, Lavon helped with Meals on Wheels in Baird, TX. She had a "green thumb," and enjoyed gardening of all types. In addition, her hobbies included sewing and working puzzles. She particularly enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and Sudoku puzzles. Even in her later years when she suffered with dementia, she continued to work those Sudoku puzzles. She was particularly fond of her dogs, especially Chihuahuas and Shelties.
She is survived by Bill, her husband of almost 51 years of their home in Portales; as well as 9 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by both of her parents and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Verna and Floyd Hare and Norma and James Creighton.
