It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Chris Gonyea, beloved son, brother, husband, father, friend, community leader. He passed away on April 11, 2025, at the age of 57, from an apparent heart attack while doing what he loved, leading and uplifting his team at State Savings Bank of Manistique, MI, during staff development training.
Born on January 20, 1968, in Chicago Heights, IL, Chris lived a life grounded in kindness, humility, and service. From an early age, his warmth, authenticity, and generous spirit made him a source of strength and comfort to those around him. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force, where he forged values of integrity, teamwork, and leadership that he carried with him throughout his life.
After his military service, Chris poured his heart into community banking, where he rose to become a trusted leader. As President and CEO of State Savings Bank of Manistique, he was more than just an executive-he was a mentor, a motivator, and a friend. His commitment to personal connection was the hallmark of his leadership style, always putting people first, whether they were coworkers, clients, or strangers in need.
Chris' love for his family was the foundation of his life. His presence lit up every room he entered. His ability to see and care for others was his superpower-he put the needs of others before his own, offering support, encouragement, and compassion without hesitation.
His sudden departure has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy of love, service, and genuine human connection lives on in the countless lives he touched.
Chris is survived by his wife of 38 years, Karen (Johnson); his children Corey (McKenzie Mickelson) and Kelsy, all of Manistique; his mother Shirley Swanson of Munising; his mother-in-law Phyllis Johnson of Marquette; his sisters, Ann Gonyea and Sarah Paradise of Round Lake Beach, IL, and Katherine (Etienne) Nel of Palatine IL; his sister-in-law Beth (Dale) Moilanen of Gwinn; several nieces and nephews and an extended network of friends, colleagues, and community members who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his father Leo Gonyea, beloved uncle, John Stapleton, father-in-law, Roy Johnson, and stepfather Rodger Swanson.
A celebration of Chris' life will be held on Wednesday, April 16 at the Fausett Family Funeral Home in Manistique, with visitation beginning at
11 am, and memorial service at 5:30 pm. Mr. Mark Duerwaechter will be presiding.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Manistique Area Schools' Foundation or the Schoolcraft County Community Foundation, honoring his legacy as a Manistique Emerald and his lifelong dedication to helping others.
He gave his heart to the world-and it gave it back, full of love.
Fausett Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
