In Loving Memory of Chuan Ko (Tom) Chi
1935 2025 Chuan Ko (Tom) Chi, aged 90, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, loyalty to family, and a deep love of stories. Born in Xiamen, China, Tom spent his early years exploring the countryside before moving to the Philippines as a teenager. There, he met Rositathe girl who would become his beloved wife of nearly 60 years. As a young man, he moved to Brazil in search of opportunity, where he joined General Motors in So Paulo and made meaningful contributions to automotive manufacturing. Eventually, he reunited with Rosita in New York, and together they began their life in the United States. Tom and Rosita settled in New Haven, Connecticut, where they raised their two daughters, Claudine and Cynthia. He worked as an HVAC mechanic in the engineering department at Yale New Haven Hospital for more than 30 years. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and pursuit of continuous improvement, he left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike. He was certified by the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society in refrigeration and air conditioning and was a proud member of ASHRAE and RSES. A lifelong learner, Tom read widely on many topics, thoughtfully annotating passages in his neat, elegant handwriting. He had a signature styleplaid shirts and stylish hatsand enjoyed long walks around the neighborhood. A feminist in his own right, Tom never tied actions to gender. He was a steadfast partner to Rosita and instilled independence and responsibility in his daughters. Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Rosita; daughters Claudine (Michael) and Cynthia (Geoffrey); grandchildren who brought him endless joy; loving nieces and nephews; and dear friends who loved him like family. We will deeply miss his quiet strength, warm laughter, and mischievous sense of humor.
