On December 24, 2024, Claire Evan Nussbaum (85) peacefully passed away with his loved ones by his side.
Born to Lewis and Arlene (Falb) Nussbaum on October 7, 1939, he was one of nine children. On November 19, 1960, he married Lula Jane Stutzman.
Those who knew Claire would often remark that he could do anything. As a teenager, he learned carpentry by building cabinetry alongside his father.
As an adult, he built homes, designed agricultural and commercial concrete storage structures, and created beautiful woodworking projects for his family and friends.
It was important to Claire that all his projects were completed with precision and excellence. Without a doubt, he took Colossians 3:23 - 24a to heart. "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. Not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord."
Family was Claire's priority. He loved building fun projects with the kids and grandkids, traveling to Michigan every summer with his entire family and celebrating milestones together.
His family loved hearing his life stories and upon the encouragement from one of his grandsons, Claire was able to write those stories and have them published this last summer.
As a business owner, he has impacted many employees over the past 54 years. He cared deeply for those who worked for him. The legacy of his company continues.
Claire made his home in Wayne County, Ohio for his 85 years, although he was blessed to visit all 50 states and 40 countries with family and friends. Those travels included missions work and construction projects.
Missions outreach was a big part of his heart and life. He and Lu financed wells to be drilled in third-world countries so that many families could have fresh drinking water. He helped build cluster homes in Africa for orphaned children so they could have a comfortable home life.
In 2003 he combined his construction expertise with his heart for the ministry to build a concrete lighthouse in Warsaw, Ohio. He designed and engineered one-of-a-kind tapered forms that he used to build a poured concrete lighthouse for Gospel Hill Ministries. To date, visitors from 45+ states and 24 countries have climbed the stairs to look out over the gorgeous Coshocton County countryside.
The May 2016 issue of Ohio Magazine features the story behind this dream-come-true final construction project. He was blessed to have 2 of his brothers, Earl and Gordon Nussbaum, working by his side.
Claire never sought fame or accolades; in fact, he usually did everything he could to stay out of the spotlight. If you have a chance to read his book, "God's Faithfulness", it will be evident how Claire passionately listened and followed God's lead.
Children of Claire and Lu are Steve (Cindy) Nussbaum and Shari Nussbaum. Grandchildren are Jason (Jamie) Nussbaum, Ryan (Allison) Nussbaum, Jessi (Brian) Wells, Amanda (Sam) Kerstetter, Jake (Lindsey) Bohrer and Amanda (Jeremy) Moore. There are 12 great-grandchildren.
Claire is preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Arlene (Falb) Nusbaum, his two sisters Betty Hochstetler and Doris Stutzman and a brother Kenneth Nussbaum.
Calling hours will be held at Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Dr., in Wooster, Ohio on Monday, December 30 from 3 - 5 PM. and 6 - 8 PM.
Funeral services will then take place on Tuesday, December 31, 2024,11:00 AM at Connection Church, 1633 Portage Road in Wooster, Ohio with Pastor Jason Nussbaum officiating. Visitation will be one hour (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM) prior to services at the church.
