Longtime twp. clerk passes away...
Oxford Township was deeply saddened to learn that Clara J. Sanderson, who served as township clerk from 1972 to 2008, passed away on Friday, Oct. 3. She was 94 years old.
First elected in November 1972, Sanderson helped guide this township through some major changes. During her time in office, she played a role in acquiring land for three township parks (Seymour Lake, Powell Lake and Oakwood Lake) and helped approve the construction of two fire stations, two water towers, two water treatment plants and a new township hall. She also helped oversee Oxford's conversion from a general law township with a five-member board of trustees to a charter township governed by a seven-member board.
Sanderson's involvement in local government began in 1966 when she went to work for the township treasurer. At the time, the treasurer was her husband Bruce. She served as his deputy. When Bruce left office in 1970, Sanderson went to work as assistant to the township clerk. A local homeowner's association convinced Sanderson to run for clerk in 1972 and the rest is history.
Sanderson always put her heart into serving her community and never failed to do what was right. She prided herself on carefully weighing the pros and cons of each issue and considering all viewpoints before casting a vote. Whenever the township board made a decision she disagreed with, Sanderson set aside her opinions and feelings, and did whatever was needed to move things forward. At the end of the day, Sanderson cared about Oxford and wanted what was best for everyone.
Clara Sanderson did so much to help create the modern township that we call home. We owe her a debt of gratitude. She will be missed. Thank you for everything, Clara.
