Clifford G. Benson, Jr, 77, of
Sewickley, PA passed peacefully into his Savior's arms on Friday, September 12, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Cheryl (Allen) Benson, his two cherished sons, Gregory (Courtney Elizabeth) Benson and Paul Benson along with his four adored granddaughters; Brinsley Grace, Charlotte, Blakelyn and Savannah. Clifford was preceded in death by his beloved son, Matthew; his parents, Clifford Sr. and Gladys (Dietz) Benson and his brother Robert Benson.
After Cliff graduated from Latrobe High School, he received his BS in Accounting from Penn State University-Smeal College of Business. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School and a Masters of Law in Taxation from New York University School of Law.
Cliff built a remarkable 37 year career as a partner at Deloitte. He, subsequently, went on to help lead the project to build Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State University. From there, he served as the Chief Development Officer of the Buffalo Sabres. He played an integral role leading a team that brought the Buffalo Harborcenter to life.
Over the course of his career, Cliff served on the Penn State Board of Trustees, and later was a Director of Penn State University Health. Cliff also served on the Allegheny Country Club Board of Governors and the YMCA Board in
Sewickley, PA. He was a member of the Japan American Society in both Florida and PA, and had the opportunity to travel to Japan. Over his lifetime, he would travel worldwide.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, his true legacy was his commitment to giving back and serving others. During his time in New York City in the 70's, he was a mentor with Big Brothers Association. Once relocated to Plantation, Fl with his young family, Cliff had the opportunity to serve as President of his church, Gloria Dei Lutheran, in Davie, Florida in the 1980s.
Arriving in Pittsburgh in 1991, His passion for Christ led him to join the John Guest Evangelistic Team, whose mission was to spread the gospel and provide humanitarian aide.
Additionally, he served as Junior Warden on the Vestry of St. Stephens Anglican Church in
Sewickley, Pa.
Cliff's passion for service to others led him to Imani Christian Academy, where he served on the Board, including a time as President.
In 2000, alongside the Pittsburgh Penguins Alumni Association, Clifford helped launch Hockey in the Hood, now called Pittsburgh ICE, a program that opened the door for underprivileged children to experience the game of hockey.
He was also affiliated with Hasek's Heroes, SABAH - Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped and the Buffalo Outer Harbor Development Committee.
Cliff also had the privilege to make three trips to Haiti bringing medical relief following 2010 earthquake.
One of the highlights for his sons was that he was one of three founding parents who established the Quaker Valley Hockey Team.
Over many years of his life, Cliff actively pursued athletic activities. Along with being an avid golfer and cyclist, he ran several marathons, including NYC, mini triathlons and even accomplished a Tough Mudder at the age of 65. He also played Rugby during his time in New York. Cliff loved watching and attending Penn State and Steelers football and Penguin Hockey with family and friends. He had a love for music ranging from Mozart to the rock band Boston, but perhaps, singing the old hymns gave him the greatest joy.
Above all, he was devoted to his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather…lovingly known as Popi, always telling his granddaughters, "I love you to the moon and back".
Cliff loved to create relationships with people in all walks of life. He was a mentor, friend, advisor and inspiring example. You could always count on his support and enthusiasm. He was generous of heart, mind and spirit. Cliff had many treasured relationships that were more like a brotherhood than a friendship. He will be deeply missed and forever treasured in the hearts of his family and friends and lives of those he touched. We celebrate his life and are joyful that he is in heaven with his Lord, Jesus Christ.
