Clifford Fromm Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 10, 2023.
Clifford Edwin Fromm was the son of Edwin Henry Fromm and Erna Augusta Elizabeth Mueller. He was born at home in Chicago, IL. He attended Messiah Lutheran School and Steinmetz High School in Chicago. Cliff was drafted in the Army right out of high school and served in Berlin, Germany at the end of WWII. He spent part of his time as a Chaplain's Assistant.
He married Dorothy Ethel Granow on October 9, 1948. They were married for 67 years and had three children: Judith (Terry) Oswald, James (Janice) Fromm, and Carol (Richard) Carlson. They had seven grandsons: Michael (Brooke) and Matthew (Andrea) Oswald, Nicholas (Sarah), Steven (Maria), and Daniel Fromm, and William and Timothy Carlson. They also had eleven great-grandchildren (seven great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters): James and Kevin Oswald (Matthew's), Luke and Andrew Oswald, (Michael's), Charley and Presley Fromm (Steven's), Finnegan, Sullivan, and Mollina Fromm (Nicholas's) and Jacksen and Arabella Fromm (Daniel's). Cliff and Dorothy thoroughly enjoyed spending time with their family.
Cliff and Dorothy lived in Chicago, IL (1948-1954), Skokie, IL (1954-1967), Glenview, IL (1967-2002) and Sarasota, FL (1978-2022). They had many neighbors and acquaintances during the years. Many of which became lifelong friends whose friendships they cherished.
Cliff started working at F and S Engraving (a steel and brass die engraving company) when he was in high school, a company his uncle started in 1922, and where his father also worked. He spent his whole working career at F and S Engraving and became President upon his father's retirement. He was very proud of the things he accomplished there. He retired in 1995, at which time his son, Jim took over the Presidency.
Cliff loved to bowl and was part of the weekly church bowling leagues. He also played a lot of golf after moving to Glenview. Both Cliff and Dorothy were involved in many golf leagues in both Glenview and Sarasota. In fact when living in Skokie, most of our vacations as children were spent with both Mom and Dad golfing with Grandpa Granow, and Grandma Granow watching us at the pool in Lehigh Acres, FL. In 1978, he and Dorothy bought a condo in the Meadows of Sarasota, FL and spent part of their time in the winter months between Glenview and Sarasota. During this time most of their vacations involved playing various golf courses around the United States with their golfing group called the Roosters. Soon after, they ended up buying a house in the Meadows because they needed more space when the kids and their families came down to visit. They also enjoyed cruising every year, usually in the fall and winter months. They moved permanently to their home in Sarasota in the fall of 2002. In June of 2022, Cliff came up to Illinois to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company and realized that it was best for him to be back in the Chicago area with his children.
Cliff spent his last year at Belmont Village Senior Living in Buffalo Grove, IL where he made many new friends and had many compassionate people to help him in his declining year and his dementia. In April his health started to decline. He was 96 years old upon his death on July 12, 2023.
The Lord blessed him in many ways during his lifetime and for this he often mentioned how truly grateful he was.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2023 from 3:30pm until time of memorial service 5:30pm at Matz Mt. Prospect Funeral Chapel, 410 N. Rand Road, Mt. Prospect, IL 60056.
Memorials in Cliff's honor can be made to VITAS Healthcare, 660 N. Hicks Road Suite 100, Palatine, IL 60067.
