Cliff Hansen was born April 2, 1927, in Scotia, Nebraska, the son of Marius and Elma Hansen. He graduated from Gates Business College and attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). Cliff married Donna Lee Trunnell on July 12, 1953, in Cedar Falls. They enjoyed traveling, dancing, playing cards, volunteering and following their grandchildren’s activities. They were faithful attendees of Fresh Wind Church at the Western Home.
Before attending Gates Business College, Cliff served in the U.S. Air Force. During the Korean War, Cliff served on Okinawa. He met Donna when stationed at the Waverly Air Force Station south of Waverly, Iowa. They knew each other three months when they married before he was deployed to Okinawa.
Cliff worked for the Milk Marketing Order of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In addition, Cliff owned Baldwin Beauty Shop with Donna and friends. Cliff was an avid volunteer helping with many projects at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.
Cliff was active in raising their children. He could be found nightly at a makeshift baseball field pitching ball to the neighborhood kids. Cliff enjoyed golfing and having coffee with his buddies. He also enjoyed yard work and daily exercise. He rode a bicycle well into his eighties. Cliff could be found exercising until the week of his death. His definition of a “good day” was being able to exercise on Western Home’s step machine.
Cliff was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Lee, parents and brothers and their wives. He is survived by a son Steve (Yumiko) Uchiyama-Hansen; a daughter, Sue (Rocky) Fletcher of Cedar Falls; grandchildren Jennifer (Aaron) Smith of Wilmette, Illinois, Daniel (Megan) Fletcher of Palo Alto, California; Miya and Kengo Uchiyama-Hansen; great-grandchildren Charlie and Audrey Smith of Wilmette, Illinois and Wyatt and Rhys Fletcher of Palo Alto, California; and a sister-in-law Jan Trunnell of Colorado, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
To honor Cliff’s wishes, there will be a private memorial service at a later date.
Family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Windermere, Thalman Square and Thuesen Cottage at the Western Home, and Cedar Valley Hospice, who provided care for him.
