Clifton Vandersip Obituary

Visit the Oman Funeral Home & Crematory website to view the full obituary.
Clifton Judson Vandersip was born on December 4, 1935, in New York City and was raised in Providence, Rhode Island. The youngest of four siblings, he developed a lifelong love of sailing on the Providence River and Narragansett Bay.

After high school, Cliff joined the United States Marine Corps and later graduated from the University of Rhode Island. During his first marriage to Marjorie Gillett, he welcomed his sons, Jeff and Chris. He went on to serve as a proud career Navy officer, including many years as a P-3 "sub-hunter" pilot. Following his military retirement, he built two additional careers in the private sector, finally retiring at the youthful age of 79.

Cliff was a devoted provider with an unmatched work ethic. He loved to tinker and improve everything around him-whether at home or on his boats. No roof was too high and no hull too low. The satisfaction he took in a job well done was evident to all who knew him.

In 1978, Cliff married Joan, his wife of 44 years, whom he loved dearly. Each brought two sons from previous marriages, and together they blended their families into a life always in bloom. They shared everything and were rarely apart. Their home was filled with love, laughter, and family. Together, they generously blessed their family and many others.

Cliff is predeceased by Joan, sisters Gloria and Virginia, and brother Henry. He is survived by his four sons, Jeff, Chris, Joe, and Alan; 12 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Connie Norton for her devoted service and care to both Joan and Cliff in their home in the twilight of their lives.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Union Mission of Virginia Beach. Fair winds and following seas.

The visitation will begin with the family receiving friends on Monday, April 6, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Oman Funeral Home 653 Cedar Road Chesapeake 23322. The funeral service will start at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A private interment will be held at a later time, in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
