Dr. Clyde Martin, aged 76, formerly of Athens, passed away on October 30th, 2024 at Parkwest Hospital, Knoxville, following complications of a hemorrhagic stroke.Born in Atlanta, GA, he was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Dan Martin, his mother, Ruth Keels Martin and his brother, Tony Martin. Clyde is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann Marshall Martin, son Jeffrey Martin, daughter-in-law Kelly Martin and grandson Teddy Martin. He is also survived by brothers Dr. Daniel Martin (Glenn Ann), Dr. Wallace Martin (Tammy), Dr. Zach Martin, sisters Patsy Mobley, Marilyn Freeman (Hugh), Lynn Martin and several nieces and nephews.Clyde graduated from Emory University, served in the U.S. Army and the Georgia National Guard and received his MD degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed residencies in surgery and urology at Baptist Memorial Hospital and the UT Health Sciences Center in Memphis. He opened his urology practice in Athens in 1984. He enjoyed coaching AYSO soccer, was a scout leader with Troop 118 and was a member of the McMinn County Rescue Squad. A board-certified physician, he served as a volunteer for the Tennessee Highway Patrol providing equipment and medical care for the troopers. He was a strong supporter of the men and women in law enforcement. One of the highlights of his life was spending time with the deputies of the Sheriff's Department.Clyde taught scuba diving and was honored to be chosen to dive with the Cambrian Foundation on the USS Monitor Civil War ship. His first dive to 100 feet was a real thrill. While in Athens, he worked with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a Weapons of Mass Destruction Hazmat Technician and participated in other projects he never would reveal. He assisted with the immediate recovery efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans providing medical care and support to law enforcement and recently has been a resource for the people impacted by Hurricane Helene.Following his time in Athens, he joined the faculty of the UT Health Sciences Center in Memphis, teaching and training medical students and residents, and treating veterans at the VA Hospital. He finished his 35-year medical career at the VA in Biloxi, MS and retired to Tellico Village where he fished non-stop although he didnt catch many fish.According to his wishes, in May, Clydes ashes will be scattered in the Hiwassee River where he and Jeff fished, the Boy Scouts camped and hopefully the trout will be biting.
