Colbert Smith, 90, of Scottsburg, IN, passed away peacefully at 4:11 AM on February 11, 2025, at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center. Born on August 14, 1934, in Bowlingtown, KY, Colbert led a life full of love, dedication, and service.
A proud graduate of Scottsburg High School, Colbert served his country honorably in the United States Army. He went on to work as a skilled millwright at American National Can, where he retired after many years of dedicated service.
On September 12, 1959, Colbert married the love of his life, Elizabeth Katherine (Maggard) Smith, in Hazard, KY. They shared a beautiful marriage until her passing on March 5, 2017. Together, they built a family filled with love and cherished memories.
Colbert had a passion for life's simple joys. He loved fishing, playing and coaching baseball-particularly Little League-and planting gardens, where he became famous for his green beans. A devoted UK fan, he enjoyed listening to bluegrass music, Colbert also found immense happiness spending time with his beloved grandchildren. His warmth and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Roy (Charlotte) Smith of Phoenix, AZ, and Reba (Scott) Herald of Scottsburg, IN; three grandchildren, Skylar, Scarlett, and Ethan; his sister, Ann Stout of Camby, IN; and his devoted companion, Margie Everhart.
Colbert was preceded in death by his parents, Roy L. Smith and Ota (Barger) Smith; his daughter, Rhonda Jeanene Smith; and his siblings, Coleen Barger and Madeline Joy Brinegar.
