I first met Connie in the summer of 2017 when she was a student in my Gen Chem I class. It was obvious that Connie was an outstanding student. She earned the high score on nearly every test. I also had Connie in my Gen Chem II class the following fall. Same thing: high score after high score.
In the fall of 2019, Connie was a student in my Analytical Chemistry class (a class that involved 3 hours of lecture and 7 hours of lab). Connie told me that she would probably miss some class time due to her cancer treatment. I must say I was concerned about how she would hold up in the lab. I was also concerned about how she would be treated by her fellow students, all of whom were at least 25 years younger than her. But she fit right in. She never missed a class. And she continued to get high scores.
That fall was the last time I saw Connie, but we remained in regular email contact. We addressed "important" issues such as our cats, music, her guitars, concerts we went to in the 80s, and fishing. The depth of her knowledge was stunning.
I want to tell Joe and Connie's family that although she was an introvert and extremely humble, Connie couldn't hide her brilliance. She couldn't hide her courage. She couldn't hide her strength. We saw it so clearly! No doubt her memory is a blessing to all who took the time to know her.
