Constance "Connie" (Azoff) Stolow, 92, of Winchester, Massachusetts, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 29, 2025.
She is survived by her husband Robert Stolow; her three daughters and their husbands who all grew up in Winchester: Marjorie and Leonard Johnson, Karen and Paul Neurath, and Michelle Stolow and Mark Sobkowicz; her seven grandchildren Rachel, Michael, Eric, Sarah, Evan, Timothy, and Kathryn; and her great-grandchildren Esme, Whitman, Jamie, and Zoe. She was predeceased by her sister Shirley Freedberg and brother William Azoff.
Connie was a loving and beloved mother and grandmother. As her children and grandchildren accumulated partners and spouses, she welcomed them warmly and enthusiastically into the family. She was also a surrogate mother to friends of her children and to Bob's graduate students. She welcomed newcomers to the United States, including Russian Jews and Sudanese refugees, tutoring them in English and helping them find jobs.
She kept up with an extensive network of friends and relations, including sending Christmas photos and letters annually since the 1960s. She loved to entertain and bring people together, hosting family parties, and an annual dinner at Temple Shir Tikvah. She brought her children and grandchildren together each summer to Wellfleet on Cape Cod for four decades.
Connie was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Harry and Mollie Azoff. She grew up in Brookline where she met and married Bob, her husband of 72 years. She received a bachelor's degree from Boston University and master's degree from Tufts University, both in the field of education. She was a teacher, and then a mother. When her daughters were older, she had a career in gifted education.
She and Bob moved to Winchester in 1961 where she became active in the League of Women Voters and was also a Town Meeting Member. She founded the Winchester Jewish Community, which later established Temple Shir Tikvah. She also started the Winchester Chess Club and commissioned the creation of a giant chess set that appeared at Town Day for many years. In later years, she became involved with the Jenks Center where she was on the Board and was Chair of the Education Committee. She was an avid reader and loved to share her favorites with family and friends. She ran a popular speaker series at the Jenks for many years, featuring her favorite authors.
Services will be at Temple Shir Tikvah, 34 Vine Street, Winchester, on Monday, November 3, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Temple Shir Tikvah at www.shir-tikvah.org/giving
