Curtis Highsmith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services - New Haven on Dec. 17, 2025.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Curtis Lee Highsmith on Friday, December 12, 2025 at the age of 71, after a long battle with illness. Curtis was a beloved member of the community, known for his dedication, kindness, and the strength he showed in all aspects of his life.
Born on September 8, 1954 in North Carolina, Curtis spent his youth in New Haven, Connecticut, where he developed a passion for basketball. As a standout athlete and an unsung hero, he played on his high school basketball team at Wilbur Cross High School, leading the team to championships and was known for his competitive spirit and team leadership. Curtis' legacy on the court is still talked about to this day. Those who saw him on the court will forever remember his skill, sportsmanship, and the drive he brought to every game.
Curtis spent his years working with the youth and was well respected by students and his peers. After 22 years, he retired from Eli Whitney Technical High School working as a security officer. For many years, he was a familiar, reassuring presence in the halls of Eli Whitney, where he helped ensure the safety of students and staff with the same dedication and care that he brought to everything he did. His work in the school system went beyond his duties; he became a trusted figure for students and staff alike, always offering a kind word or a helping hand. Outside of work, Curtis was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished time spent with his family and friends. He was known for his warm smile, sense of humor, and his unwavering support for those he loved.
Curtis is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Patricia Scales-Highsmith; father, Orlander Highsmith; sister, Crystal Highsmith-Brooks; daughters, Shalanda M. (Roy) Kelly, Katharyn Y. Turpin, Alonda Gouthier, and Alise Scales; son, Eric (Judy) Scales; granddaughters, Laniah Horton, Kendra Streater, Ronea Benjamin, Reign Benjamin, Jadine Benjamin, Aloni Cobb, Katiana Y. Turpin, Sherika Scales, and Samantha Scales; grandson, Jacob Scales; great-grands, KoriSkai Perry, Raigan-Ezra Lee, Alayah Scales, and Ozariah Moore; nephews, Adrielle Highsmith, Byron Reaves, and Eric Dennis; niece, Towanna Dennis; and a host of relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his mother, Doris Highsmith; brothers, Darren Lamont Highsmith, and Robert L. Highsmith; and nephew, Milton "Wink" Highsmith.
We find comfort in knowing that Curtis' legacy lives on through the lessons he taught us, the love he shared, and the memories we will cherish forever. Curtis will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.

My name is Alphonza Graham Jr. I used to work with Curtis at Saint Raphael when I was a teenager before I joined the Air Force in 1980.

Curtis was older than me, but always treated us younger guys with respect and gave us some guidance.

I now live in California, and receive this news from my cousin James Bellamy who also used to work with Curtis.

I´m glad I got a chance to run into Curtis when I came home to visit. Always a stand up guy.

Rest in Peace my Brother. And, my condolences to the family.
