Curtis D. "Skip" Weiand, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in
South Bend with his wife and son at 8:24am on Monday, February 7, 2022
following complications from a stroke.
Skip was born February 8, 1947, in South Bend, Indiana to Curtis D.
Weiand and Elizabeth Rhone Weiand. He was raised by his grandparents
and attended Washington High School. Skip was also very close to his
uncle Kenneth L. Weiand. Skip was preceded in death by his parents and
numerous siblings, including Brad Troxel and Larry Troxel.
In 1964, Skip enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and served
two tours in Vietnam as a rifleman and a helicopter gunner. After
leaving the Marine Corps in 1968, Skip joined the St. Joseph County
Police Department, retiring in 1998 as a Lieutenant in the Special
Crimes Unit. In 2002, he returned to the department as the Assistant
Chief of Police, retiring again in 2010 as the Chief of Police. In
total, he spent 42 years in public service.
On December 9, 1972, Skip married Kristine L. Weiand in South Bend,
Indiana. They had two children, Heather Gustavvson, of Uppsala,
Sweden, and Kurt Weiand, of Kettering, England. Skip loved spending
time with all four of his grandchildren, Jack Gustavvson, Aria Weiand,
Carly Weiand, and Colton Weiand. He is also survived by his daughter-
in-law, Jennifer Weiand of Kettering, England.
In retirement, Skip split his time between South Bend and Lubec,
Maine, where he enjoyed being near the ocean and working on the house
with Kristine. He was immensely proud of his children and
grandchildren.
