Daljit Singh (Dilla), 81
Born: Lyallpur, British India
Passed: July 11, 2025 – peacefully at home
With deep love and sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Daljit Singh, affectionately known as Dilla, on July 11, 2025, at the age of 81, surrounded by the comfort of his home and
the memories he so lovingly built.
Daljit was born in Lyallpur, British India, to Santokh Singh and Sumitra Kaur. In his twenties, he made the bold and life-changing decision to immigrate to the United States, where he went on to complete his Master's degree in Civil Engineering at Rutgers University. He built a legacy of dedication through his long career with the Detroit Water and Sewage Department, where his commitment to public service was matched only by the many deep and lasting friendships he formed along the way.
Daljit is survived by his beloved wife, Usha Singh, and their two daughters: Payal Singh, mother of Simran and Jasmine; and Puja Singh Talwar, with her husband Vishal Talwar, and their children Riya and Nikhil. He also leaves behind his siblings, Savinder Kaur, Jagjit Bajwa, and Inderjit Singh, and a large extended family and community of friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved siblings Kamaljit Singh, Manjit Singh, and Prakash Kaur.
Daljit had a huge heart-and he wore it proudly on his sleeve. He was a phenomenal chef who deeply appreciated his own cooking, and he shared his culinary joy with those lucky enough to sit at his table. A lifelong learner, he was an avid reader and always eager to discover something new. His connection to his memories filled his home with warmth; the walls covered in photographs served as a living album of a life fully lived and a testament to his deep love for his family and treasured relationships.
He loved movies and, since childhood, kept a handwritten list of every film he watched. His music was loud and full of feeling, with a deep love for ghazals and qawwalis.
What made Daljit truly special was his warmth, forgiveness, generosity, and sentimentality. He loved deeply and gave freely. His presence was a comfort, his affection unreserved, and his heart always open. He took bold steps not just for himself but for others-bringing his entire family to the U.S. and helping them build a new life. His love was not quiet. It was proud,
present, and enduring.
In every chapter of his life-including his final one-Daljit lived with intention, heart, and on his own terms. As the song goes, "I faced it all and I stood tall-and did it my way."
Visitation will take place on Monday, July 14, 2025 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile Rd. (SHELBY TOWNSHIP).
