Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vander Plaat Funeral Home - Wyckoff on Feb. 11, 2026.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Daniel (Dan) John Manning, Sr., a man of boundless love, strength, and compassion. Dan left us at 75 doing what he loved- skiing with friends in Vermont and living life to the fullest. He lived a joyous life, in service to his family, community, business, and friends. If you were lucky enough to know Dan, you felt his energy and infectious spirit fill every room he entered. He passed on February 9, 2026 surrounded by his family, and has left a deep void in our lives.
Dan was born in
the Bronx, New York, but spent most of his childhood in Waldwick, New Jersey. He attended St. Luke's and graduated from Waldwick High School, where he met his dear wife Joyce. Years later they married and moved to
Allendale, New Jersey, where they raised their family for the past 45 years.
As an entrepreneur, Dan was very proud of the small family business he built with Joyce, Manning Claim Services, rooted in a love of antiques and born out of his previous shop, Deja Vu Antiques. He had a tireless work ethic and positive "can do" attitude, which served as our guiding north star. A board member and former president of his trade organization, his accomplishments were many.
Dan had a deep sense of community and devotion to family. He was a member and former president of the Holiday Observers, former Zoning Board member, and guitarist/singer in the Mid Life Crisis Band. He loved music, and played in bands from a young age, even touring with his high school band The Nomads. He fostered a love for music in his children and grandchildren, now the soundtrack of memories we carry with us. As a devout Catholic he cared deeply about the world, the environment, and the people around him.
A master storyteller, Dan loved good food, a neat single malt Scotch, and bocce ball in the backyard. Dan enjoyed feeding the birds, and fighting the squirrels. Out in the garden he grew peppers, finding the hottest ones to crush up & share. He loved "taking a dip" in Crestwood Lake, driving over with the wind in his hair and stubbornly enjoying the warmth of the sun on his skin until his final days. He cherished weeks in Long Beach Island, golfing with friends, ski trips to Vermont, and staying active at the gym. A lifelong Yankee fan, he coached his children in baseball for many years.
Dan's love and devotion to his family was limitless. He is survived by his wife Joyce; children Jason (Laura), Joel (Laura), Katie (Mark), and Daniel (Sunny); and grandchildren Kayla (Evan), James, Piper, Everly, and Jackson. He joins his predeceased father Daniel, his mother Emily, and brothers Ricky and Billy. We imagine him greeted by our beloved pets, and know he is comforted in everlasting peace.
A memorial will be held at Vander Plaat Funeral Home at 257 Godwin Ave,
Wyckoff, New Jersey, on February 16th from 3-7pm, followed by a mass at Guardian Angel Church in Allendale on February 17th at 10:30 am.
