He was born on December 31, 1957 in Ogden, Utah. He is the first of four children born to Ted and Juanita Smith. Dan was very active in scouting in his youth earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Dan attended Roy High School where he excelled in basketball, playing for his father, Coach Ted Smith. He also played middle linebacker on the football team and served as Seminary President his senior year. After high school, he walked on to play football for BYU under Coach Lavelle Edwards. After a year at BYU, Dan served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taipei, Taiwan. Following his mission Dan played linebacker for Ricks College, earning all-conference honors. He later attended Weber State University and graduated with a bachelors in Zoology and nearly completed a second degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. Dan worked in a number of fields throughout his career including medical services, warehousing, shipping, and trucking. He was a dedicated hard worker and took pride in the work he did.

Dan's son, Daniel Jared Smith, was born to Dan and his wife Michelle Cowan on May 20, 1980. They later divorced. Dan loved spending time with his son, and they had many adventures together in the great outdoors. Dan married Sheri Mae Love in 1991. They lived in Roy for over 25 years and enjoyed serving and helping their neighbors. They loved the outdoors and spent much of their free time camping with family at their property in Evergreen Estates.

Dan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and often shared his testimony of the Church with his family. He was blessed with life-long friends that stood by him and provided tremendous support throughout his life. Besides football and basketball, he enjoyed golf, tennis, fly-fishing, hunting, and watching just about any sporting event on TV.
