Daniel Edwin Maloney, 96, formerly of Hockessin, DE passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 6, 2022. He was residing at Sunrise Senior Living at the time of his passing.
Dan was born on February 9, 1926, in Jericho, Vermont to the late Edwin and Katherine Maloney. He graduated from Jericho High School and attended St. Michael's College prior to serving as a radio technician in the U.S. Navy in WWII. After his service in the Navy, he graduated from St. Michael's College and subsequently earned a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Notre Dame in 1951. He had a long and successful career with DuPont, most of which was at the Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE.
It was at DuPont that he met Beverly Werner. They married and spent 67 years together, raising 8 children. Much of that time was spent in Hockessin, DE where they were parishioners of St. Mary of the Assumption Church.
When he wasn't working, Dan enjoyed coaching and watching baseball, following Notre Dame football, and fixing just about anything that was broken. He never met a carburetor that he didn't want to rebuild.
After Dan retired from DuPont, he and Bev moved to Chesapeake City, Maryland, where they resided for several years. Their retirement home on the Bohemia River was the location of many get-togethers where boating, fishing, and crabbing were enjoyed by family and friends. They subsequently moved to Jenner's Pond Retirement Community where they lived for 8 years before Beverly passed away in 2020.
Dan was predeceased by his wife, his oldest son Tom (Lynda) Maloney and one great grandchild. He is survived by 7 children: Mary (Henry) Modelski, Paul (Marie) Maloney, Tim (Joann) Maloney, Steve (Leslie) Maloney, Kathy (Dave) Eastburn, Phil (Judy) Maloney, and Jim Maloney (Kate Daniels). He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. The family cherishes the many memories resulting from their devotion to each other, their children, and their grandchildren.
The family thanks the staff at Vitas Hospice and Sunrise Senior Living for the compassionate care during his final days.
Family and friends are invited to the visitation at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd, Pike Creek on Thursday, August 11th, 2022, from 5-7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph on the Brandywine (Greenville, DE) on Friday, August 12th, 2022 beginning at 10AM. Interment will follow in St. Patrick's Ashland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Michael's College in Colchester, VT or a veterans' charity of your choice.
