Daniel Edward McLaughlin, 86, a longtime Tewksbury resident, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7 at Benchmark Billerica Crossings with his family by his side. He was the widower of the late Mary Jo (Cozza) McLaughlin who passed away in July of 2022 after 57 years of marriage.
Daniel was born in Lowell on April 21, 1939 and was a son of the late Daniel Edward McLaughlin, II and the late Mary Agnes (Watson) Howard. He was raised and educated in Tewksbury and was a graduate of Tewksbury Memorial High School. Following his graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving his country for 4 years before being honorably discharged.
Daniel worked with Carlton Processing of Reading for over 39 years before his retirement in the late 1990's. In his retirement he delivered flowers for local florists, including Raymond and Garland and Classic Flowers in Chelmsford. He had an amazing sense of direction even in his later years. He never missed an opportunity to go for a drive with Gary, April and the gang at Billerica Crossings offering short cuts and memories along the route.
Dan loved cars--- driving them, shopping for them, tinkering with them or just talking about them. Breakfast was his favorite part of the day. Through the years Dan often connected with family and friends over a good ham and cheese omelet. Dan took pride in a well-kept yard. He was the first to lend a hand in the neighborhood. He was hard working, and centered his life on helping people in any way that he could. Dan also loved sports. He was an avid Boston Sports fan-Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, Celtics. Watching a game with him was always entertaining. Dan coached baseball for his sons in his younger days and never missed a sporting event for his grandchildren later in life. He enjoyed fishing and was a league bowler for over 10 years at the original Wamesit Lanes in the 1970's.
Dan had a great sense of humor, was friendly and dependable. He loved to make people smile. He and his beautiful bride Mary, built a life of love, laughter and great memories. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Dan is survived by his 4 children, Steven McLaughlin and his wife, Carolyn, of Brookline, NH, James McLaughlin of Tewksbury, Patricia Benner and her husband, Neil, of Amherst, NH, Mike McLaughlin and his wife, Coleen, of Chelmsford, his 6 grandchildren, Evan, Megan, Jack, Lizzie, Bridget and Sean. He is also survived by his sister Cathrine Paquette and her husband, Joseph "Moe" Paquette, of Tyngsboro, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a brother of the late Keith Howard and a stepson of the late Robert Howard.
All are welcome to attend his visitation from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 15 at the Tewksbury Funeral Home 1 Dewey Street, Tewksbury, MA.
On Monday June 16, all are welcome to attend his Funeral Mass which will be offered at 11:30 a.m. at St. William of York Church. 1351 Main Street, Tewksbury, MA followed by procession for burial at Tewksbury Cemetery.
