Daniel Thomas Smithson found peace on Saturday, May 18, 2024. He was 63 years old.
Daniel, born to Benjamin and Margie Mae on October 16, 1960, in Marero, Louisiana, was a man of many accomplishments. He proudly served in the United States Army and the US Marine Corps. He was a lifelong learner, earning not one but two master's degrees, the first in communication from Western Kentucky University and the second in linguistics from the University of Louisville. His passion for learning was evident in his voracious reading habits, with history being his favorite subject.
Daniel's spirit was one of boundless adventure and fearless exploration. He embarked on the challenge of a lifetime, conquering the Triple Crown of Distance Hiking of America. This extraordinary achievement involved mastering the Big Three National Scenic Trails: The Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide trails, spanning a staggering 7,900 miles across 22 US states. His unwavering determination and physical endurance were truly awe-inspiring. He was also a member of the 52 Peak Hiking Club of Las Vegas and became an elite climber by conquering his 53rd peak.
Mr. Smithson was an educator who worked at Jefferson Community & Technical College-Southwest Campus in the mid-90s and at Jefferson County Public Schools in Special Education in the early 2000s. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a Master Mason, Scottish Rite, and a Kosair Shriner.
His love for his family was immeasurable, and they shared many cherished moments together, including numerous beautiful vacations.
Daniel is survived by his children Seth Smithson (Kasey) of Indianapolis, Indiana; Elizabeth Staller (Russell), Emily Smithson (Mike), Orianna Smithson (James), and Nelia Smithson, all of Owensboro, Kentucky; and his grandbabies Victoria and Trinity Hillard and Kayden White. He is also survived by his dear friend Nancy Finley (Chris), who has comforted and supported him during this difficult time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Hugh Smithson and Margie Mae Short Roberts, and his sister, Desiree Smithson Teoulet.
Graveside services will be held at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Cedar Grove Cemetery, 4608 Cedar Grove Road, Shepherdsville, Kentucky 40165.
