Danny Belt Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Cremation Society of Iowa - Des Moines on Nov. 18, 2025.
Danny Joseph Belt, 67, of West Des Moines, died at home Nov. 16. He was a retired graphic artist who continued to sculpt, paint and create in his home workshop.

Dan graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1976, and attended the commercial art program at Des Moines Area Community College. He worked as an artist at the Graphic Corporation, Sarcone Printing, Richtman's Printing and then started his own business, Belt Creative Associates.

He won recognition for his artwork, creating two posters of the Des Moines city skyline used in Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau print and TV ads. In the '90s, Dan won an international competition by the Corel Draw software company for his work, and was one of the first artists in the metro to design on the computer.

While poor health forced him to retire, he turned his home's garage into a workshop and continued to sculpt and share pieces with friends and family, as well as fans online.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 28 at Bloomfield United Methodist Church, 5930 Indianola Ave. in Des Moines. A visitation will be held at 10 a.m.

Dan is survived by his wife, Deb Belt of West Des Moines, his sisters: Ruby Belt of LaCrosse, WI; Robin Zavodsky (Jerry Zavodsky) of Pleasantville, IA; Becky Oehler (Shon Stefan) of Holmen, WI; and Ruth Cusack (Louis Cusack) of Chugiak, AK; plus numerous nieces, nephews and extended family; and his dog, Pammy.

Memorials may be made in care of the family to help with funeral expenses: 940 Fourth St., West Des Moines, IA 50265, or you can donate via GoFundMe to the Dan Belt Memorial Fund (https://www.gofundme.com/f/dan-belt-memorial-fund.)

I didn't know Dan before 2025 but he quickly became a best friend that I'll never forget , and I doubt will ever have such a kind caring humble genius like him in my corner for the rest of my life. He was the reason I got out of bed...for along time when I thought id already had my best days with my childhood friends long ago, I lost my fiance during labor, as well as my grandfather the year prior and the color just seemed gone out of things. It got better the day I met Dan, and it got allot better when Dan wasn't just a friend of a friend but someone who called me a good friend . I remember how proud I was to have gotten his recognition and company for days in a row over and over weeks then months, working out in the garage on different projects and collaborating all all sorts of ideas. Some of which he showed me how to make into reality. I no longer think of the words cant, or impossible . I remember what it's like to be a kid again and to know he enjoyed my company and opinions as much as I loved and will always cherish his. I lived more in the past 6 months than I have in the past 6 years and that's because of Dan, all of you who knew him and loved him know exactly what I'm talking about. He was special. any and all great deeds I accomplish or small kindnesses shared from the day we met are to be attributed primarily to Dan for showing me how fascinating the world really is if you have a true friend to share it with. I miss you so much Dan. there hasn't been a day gone by that I haven't mentioned something we built , an idea we had or bragged about you and how I could hand you the right tool before you even asked towards the end...I can promise you will never be forgotten.
