Sheryll L. McDermott, 86, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at her residence under the care of Iowa River Hospice surrounded by her family. A private graveside service will take place at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted with Abels Funeral and Cremation Services.
Sheryll Luree (Thornburg) Luiken-McDermott was born on November 11, 1939 to Floyd and Mary (Poulson) Thornburg. She lived in a small town called Pleasantville, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1957. Sheryll met and married Harris Dean Luiken on August 23, 1958. After Harris's death, Sheryll married Tim McDermott in 1984 until his passing. Some of the places Sheryll worked at over the years were Look Magazine, Harold H. Luiken & Sons, Quakerdale, and Abate of Iowa. She loved her family, the Iowa State Cyclones, road trips, Howell Tree Farm and Caitlyn Clark.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children; Jeff (Angie) Luiken of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, Lisa (Merle) Johns of Marshalltown, Iowa, grandchildren; Amanda (Angie) Luiken, Andrew (Liz) Luiken, Jessica (Erick) Eggers, Tyler (Jen) Homeyer, great grandchildren; Kinleigh Kriegel, Mari Kreigel, Hudson Eggers, Olivia Homeyer, Sawyer Homeyer, Max Luiken, Belle Luiken, William Luiken, sisters; Dora (Tom) Newsom, Mary (Lance) Wylie, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings; Kenny Thornburg, Gene Thornburg, Junior Thornburg, Jim Thornburg, Delano Thornburg, Roger Thornburg, Sharon Gray and Shirley Thornburg.
