Mr. Darius F. Butler, 70, of Waterbury, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.
Darius was born on Friday, March 5, 1954, to the late Anderson and Cleoma (Riley) Butler.
A true athlete, Darius received his early education within the Waterbury Public School System and graduated from Crosby High School. He continued his studies at Central Washington University in Kittitas County, Washington, before returning to Waterbury, where he lived until his passing. Throughout his life, Darius remained deeply engaged in his community, forming meaningful connections and leaving a lasting impact.
In 2009, Darius was honored as the Black Mayor for a Day in Waterbury, a testament to his dedication to public service. He worked for the City of Waterbury's Parks and Recreation Department for 28 years, retiring only due to illness. The North End Recreation Center was one of the places Darius became a familiar and beloved presence. Whether serving as a greeter, coaching, or even refereeing a game or two, Darius was always involved in supporting others. He also played in the Over 30 League and loved to swim at the YMCA. For years, we saw Darius jogging in Fulton Park with his dog, and later, riding his bike or driving his father's car.
Darius may not have realized the hundreds-perhaps even thousands-of lives he touched. His influence, however, was undeniable and immense. We hope that his legacy lives on in all of us who were fortunate to have been impacted by his warmth and generosity.
In addition to his work with the Parks and Recreation Department, Darius attended and coached at various basketball camps and tournaments throughout New England. He brought teams of eager young athletes to compete and be seen by coaches from AAU and junior colleges. His coaching and mentorship influenced generations of student-athletes, both in and outside of Waterbury. There was no one more highly regarded, and it is no exaggeration to call him a legend.
Darius had a deep love for family vacations, often traveling to Disney during the summer. He was also a dedicated member of Zion Baptist Church, where he worshipped faithfully until illness prevented him from attending services.
A hardworking and kind man, Darius found joy in life's beautiful opportunities and the people he met along the way. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, dependable to a fault, and known for his ever-present smile. We all have a Darius story, and his memory will live on in each of us.
Darius leaves to cherish his amazing memories, his two sisters; Julia Caraway and Ingrid "Darlene" Wade; his loving and devoted extended family members including; Marguerite Heyward Bowen, Sophie Walton, Leniecia Ward Powdar and Karen LeVasseur; god-daughter; Sashe "R`Ki" James, a host of relatives, colleagues and friends.
In addition to his parents, Darius was predeceased by brother, Lonnie Butler.

Darius was a very special man.
He got me recruited by a couple of colleges only because I asked for his help. I ended up going to college with the sole intention of playing football by my junior year. I never played but I ended up graduating from UCONN with a Bachelors Degree.

Thank you for your help Darius!
