Darlene Louise Hutterer (nee DeVillers)
Darlene, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home in
Brookfield, WI on February 7, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born in Milwaukee, WI on January 7, 1936, to Owen and Agnes DeVillers, she married Frank E. Hutterer (deceased) to whom she was a devoted wife for 59 years. Dear mother of Gregg Hutterer (s/o John Murges) and Lisa McClintock, and fond grandmother of Carly (Brian) Guy and Kyle McClintock (s/o Hannah Marx). Darlene was quite fond of her three brothers - Ron DeVillers (deceased), Owen DeVillers and Allan DeVillers and enjoyed the family get-togethers with their spouses and her many nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her strength and love and dedication to family.
Darlene liked to dance. She enjoyed being a member of the Black Stocking Review, a fun group of women with choreographed dance routines and beautiful, vibrant costumes, all hand-made by the women themselves. But she really loved to dance the waltz and polka with her husband Frank at the many extended family celebrations.
Darlene was an excellent seamstress. It was much more than a hobby; it was her contribution to the support of her family. From the day Lisa entered kindergarten, her and her daughter's entire wardrobes were sewn with Darlene's dexterity and attention to details, and all with an old Singer treadle sewing machine. She continued to sew when Lisa began her professional career, sewing entire business suits that put the department stores to shame. Clothing, draperies, upholstery, she was admired for her skills.
Darlene and Frank were frugal travelers, raising their kids on the joys of tent camping throughout the US and Canada. The joys of tent camping? Not so much for Darlene. Once her kids were grown, her daughter, while working for an airline, started her itch for air travel, traveling not only the US but many places abroad. Her all-time favorite place to vacation, however, was at her brother Owen's home in Tomahawk, WI, relaxing among the pines, pontooning upon the glistening water. Adding her grandchildren, Carly and Kyle, to the yearly summer Tomahawk trip, made it all complete.
Darlene was an integral part of her grandchildren's, Carly and Kyle's, lives. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for them. While her daughter and grandchildren's father worked, Darlene took them here and there – dance, guitar, tennis, sledding, you name it – then she would make sure they were exposed to a real home-cooked dinner. They were truly the apple of her eye.
In Darlene's later years, her home became the business site for her son Gregg's confectionary business. Not only did she enjoy the wafting scent of warm caramels coming up from the kitchen in her basement, but she was able to enjoy her son's company and support and help as her physical needs changed.
Darlene's neighbor for almost 56 years, Lowell Huenink, became her closest friend and traveling partner. Gregg and Lisa thank him for bringing support and happiness to her life after her husband, Frank's passing.
Almost two years ago, Darlene fell and fractured her left hip, then five months later fell and needed a partial hip replacement on her right hip, followed shortly thereafter by another small fracture again on her left. That was a rough six months, yet she still wanted to get back to walking without the walker.
Unfortunately, that would not be. But she was well taken care of during that time in the comfort of her home by many caregivers and family and friends, all whom we thank from the bottom of our hearts.
