The checkered flag waved, crossing the finish line, after a three year long and tough battle of
Non-Hodkins Lymphoma, Darrell Lester Hicks, known to some as Big D, of Olympia, WA,
passed away early morning on September 16th, 2025. As Darrell lay in the hospital, his
daughter asked him if he had any regrets in life. Darrell said no, that he lived a very full and
happy life and that it was wonderful. That is exactly how Darrell liked to live, with no regrets, and
to live family centered, and willing to help anyone out who needed it. Darrell is the most kind
hearted person, who was sweet to everyone, unless you wronged him. He was calm and laid
back. He was a loving father and husband, who was a hard worker and provided for his family
and did everything he could to make life full and fun.
Darrell was born on October 21st, 1958 in Germany. Darrell passed away at the age of 66.
Darrell is survived by his wife Tammy Hicks, and his daughter Colette Hudson. Darrell was
raised by his mother Beverly Sprowl, and step-father Lynn Sprowl. He is survived by his
brother Steffan Hicks, and two other siblings.
Darrell was always into tinkering and working on cars, he was a mechanic since he was a teen,
and loved racing cars on the dirt tracks in Germany. Darrell had a love for being outdoors, and
active. He had a zest for life randomly yelling, whoomp there it is," or an enthusiastic
"PACHOW" as he beat you at a card game, game of cribbage, or game of aggravation. He loved
game nights with friends and families. Camping was always something he enjoyed, even when
it rained and he had to dig a trench around the tent. Going boating with his family and friends
was a favorite pastime, water skiing, tubing, and laughing while he tried to knock people off the
innertubes. He liked crafting and building things, he could always be found in the garage or
outside doing something. His meticulous way of doing things will never be outdone. There are
many fond memories of family BBQ's and playing croquette as Darrell slams his opponents ball
across the yard, no one was safe. Darrell brought so much life and energy to those around him.
Darrell enjoyed a good meal, a big bag of gummy bears, and homemade sweet treats. He was a
cookie monster that loved a good gooey thick cookie, and would even stash them in zip lock
baggies for later. When asked where he would want to go to dinner he would often say Mexican
so he could have a big burrito, or to Chinese food. He didn't shy away from a big plate or
seconds, but being with family and eating around the table on a holiday with good conversation
brought him joy.
No words can describe how much of a fixture in our family Darrell was. His passing has left a big
hole in our hearts. But we know he is no longer suffering and he is able to be at peace and have
the biggest and best burrito up in Heaven. Darrell will be missed greatly by so many, but his
memory will forever be remembered and cherished.
In Lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Lymphoma Research Foundation at

Hicks who fought a good tough fight against cancer. We want more research to be done, more
trials to be made, and more medicines to come so that others have a better chance of going into
remission, and so their family members do not have to watch their loved ones suffer from
cancer.
