Dave Maxwell, 81 of Gibson, passed away Monday afternoon, November 4, 2024 at the Veteran's Hospital in Iowa City.
David Elver Maxwell, the son of Robert and Frances (Miller) Maxwell, was born on October 3, 1943 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1961. Dave then attended University of Northern Iowa and then Iowa State University before being drafted in 1968 by the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Dave was married to Loretta Foster in December of 1967. To this union two children, Curtis and Jenny were born. After Dave was honorably discharged, he returned to Deep River and farmed with his dad along with helping Jim Leer tile. He eventually farmed on his own while starting his tiling business in 1974 operating it for 50 years. On February 14, 1993, Dave was united in marriage to Kristin Johnson Armstrong at the Montezuma United Methodist Church adding two children, Joe and Susan.
Dave was a State Representative from 2013 to 2022 serving his district for 10 years. He enjoyed antique tractors, trains, history, reading and attending his grandchildren's activities. He was a member of the Iowa Land Improvement Contractors of "LICA" for 49 years serving as state president in 1984, Associated General Contractors of America "AGC" for 25 years, the Morrison-Schrader American Legion Post 296 of Deep River serving as commander for over 15 years and a member of the United Church of Deep River also serving on the parish council and was a lay minister.
His legacy will be cherished by his wife, Kristin Armstrong of Gibson; his children, Jenny (Shawn) Webster of Kahoka, MO, Curtis (Pam) Maxwell of Gibson, Joe (Michele) Armstrong of Montezuma and Susan (Scott) Swacker of Urbandale; ten grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren with two on the way; three siblings, Richard "Dick" Maxwell of Jacksonville, IL, Jeanne Maschmann of What Cheer and Ellen (David) Zimmerman of Deep River along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy, James Maxwell.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Monday, November 11, 2024 at the United Church of Deep River. A luncheon will follow the service with burial then held at the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 10, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma. Memorials may be directed to the United Church of Deep River or the Morrison-Schrader American Legion Post 296. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of Montezuma is in charge of the arrangements.
