David Alan Bensinger (age 64) succumbed to his illness on Saturday, June 21, 2025, with his mother (Bess Bensinger) and his brother (Ron Bensinger) by his side.
While Dave was a paraplegic for his last 32 years, it did not prevent him from pursuing his passions - boating, fishing, go-karting, camping, traveling, ECHL hockey, auto racing, and motor-cycles and mini-bikes (anything built by "Mickey" Rupp). He had a Honda 750 with a sidecar. The sidecar accommodated his wheel-chair. That garnered many strange looks as he was riding along because no one was actually on the motorcycle (see picture). He liked to enjoy life to it's fullest.
When Dave was not pursuing the interests mentioned above, he was connected to many locals throughout Ohio via radio programs. For example, WKNR - The Talk of Akron was a favorite, especially John "Couch Burner" Denning and WZLP (Loudonville) - "The Hen House" with hosts Tammy Kline, Pam Swain and Margie Danner. His favorite ECHL hockey team, Cincinnati Cyclones, broadcast on FM 100.3 The FAN.
No one was a stranger to Dave. He had friends from FL, GA, TN, New Orleans, PA, and his birth state of Ohio. When Dave traveled to all these states, he had a "man's best friend" by his side, always a chocolate lab; first Roxie, then Ahmet, and finally Yon'der. Dave was a giver. If he thought you needed something he had, he would generously give it to you, and not ask for anything in return.
Dave had frequent trips to the hospital in 2025. He always made it a point to know each caregiver's name and to thank them for caring for him. He placed his faith in Christ as his savior later in life. Now and forever, Dave is no longer confined to his wheelchair, he is no longer plagued with illness, he is at home with the Lord in a new body...walking, running, leaping, perhaps even waterskiing.
There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony next year at Pleasant Hill Lake, Perrysville, Ohio.
