MARQUETTE, MI - David Lee Blackburn, age 72, of Marquette, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2024, at UP Health System-Marquette, in the loving care of his family.
David was Born February 29, 1952, in Clinton, Indiana, the son of James and Norma (Shannon) Blackburn. David's journey through life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community.
Raised in Rockville, Indiana, David graduated from Montezuma High School in 1971. His adventurous spirit led him to the United States Air Force, where not only did he serve his country with honor, but he also met the love of his life Cheryl Sue (L'Huillier). David and his beloved wife, "Sue", were married on October 27, 1973, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, David began a distinguished 26-year career with the Marquette Department of Corrections as a correctional officer. His commitment to serving others extended beyond his professional life; after retiring from the prison in 2007, he continued to serve his community by working for the City of Marquette in the parks department.
David was a man who thrived in the great outdoors. He found joy in working in his garage, taking on construction and remodeling projects, and tending to his garden in his later years. His love for music was only matched by his passion for being present at his grandchildren's events, where he cheered them on with pride and enthusiasm.
A family man at heart, David coached little league baseball and celebrated a perfect 300 game in bowling. He loved to be at the lake house, and enjoyed his trips back home to Indiana. His Saturday's were spent going to rummage sales with Sue, which was a cherished ritual. His love for his canine companions, Cupcake and Bella, was a testament to his caring nature.
David's life was a testament to the power of putting others before oneself. He was a proud member of the Marquette American Legion and volunteered for the Marquette Booster Club, always ready to lend a helping hand. His strength and work ethic were unparalleled, but it was his capacity for love and his selfless nature that truly defined him.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Cheryl, and their loving children: Bridget (Todd) Jennings, Beau (Jolynn) Blackburn, Brett (Ashley) Blackburn, and Brittany (Spencer Larson) Blackburn, all of Marquette. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Aubree, Skyler, Landon, Sawyer Blackburn, and Savannah and Scarlett Larson. He will also be fondly remembered by his siblings: Brenda (Don) Towle, Sharon (Vince) Galey, Bonnie Stevens, Dan (Pam) Blackburn, and James Blackburn.
David was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Becky Blackburn; his sister, Bessie Spence; his brother, Randy Petrin; and his loving canine companions Tinky and Mattie.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Cancer Care of Marquette County, the staff of UP Health System ICU and Oncology, and the unwavering support from numerous family and friends who stood by them during David's courageous battle with illness.
David Lee Blackburn's life was a beautiful mosaic of love, kindness, and selflessness. He was the rock upon which his family built their dreams, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take comfort in knowing that his spirit will forever be a guiding light in the lives of all he touched. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Fassbender Swanson Hansen Funeral & Cremation Services.
