David Breay Obituary

David Edward Breay passed away Saturday, December 21st, 2024 at the age of 83. David was
born in Lansing, Michigan on July 11, 1941, to parents Lillian and Edward and graduated from
South High School in Grand Rapids. He settled and made his home in Kalamazoo and will be
remembered as a kind soul, loyal friend and longtime, devout parishioner of St. Joseph's
Catholic Church. David endeared himself to others simply by being who he was. He was keen on learning names, birthdates, the names of family members and the life circumstances of others he encountered. His ability to remember and share such details was uncanny and made it easy to be fond of him. David is dearly remembered by many parishioners at St. Joseph's Church, staff at businesses where he shopped and banked, housemates, fellow patients and those who helped provide his medical care. David is survived by two nephews, Christopher and Kevin, and five grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Edith Ann (Moses), and siblings Barbara, Catherine and James. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 936, Lake St., Kalamazoo. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. David will be laid to rest next to Edith at Riverside Cemetery. David's family would like to thank the devoted staff at Transitions Hospice, The Laurels of Galesburg and Milestone Senior Services as well as Deacon John Ryder and Monsignor Michael Hazard for their love and support. Friends may leave a condolence message for the family at www.joldersma-klein.com.

I met David Breay in the early 1990's. He was a kind and caring person who played pool quite well. The fondest memory I had with David was when he told me about his younger years. He said that he shoveled coal to the furnace to heat up the house, maybe a relative's house. David said that he worked as a Soda Jerk when he was a kid and wore a bow tie at his job. He spoke about his brother who was always there when he needed help. David was proud of his nephews and family. The last time I saw him was when I came to visit him in a house he lived at close to Borgess Hospital. I still remember our last conversation. David said that he went to the market and bought some white fish which he liked. I lost track of David since then. I'm sorry to hear that he is not with us anymore. My deepest condolences to his family.

My dog and I have been able to visit David weekly for the past year, at the Laurels of Galesburg. He would always greet me by name and routinely ask me about my husband, by name, whom he had never met. This was truly a strength of David´s and made him very endearing. I am glad he has touched my life and will miss our visits.
