In loving memory, we share the passing of David C. Champ of Blue Ash, Ohio, who passed away on February 11, 2024.
David was born June 15, 1953 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His early years were influenced significantly by his journey to Eagle Scout when he learned he had a gift for sales, earning the money needed to attend Boy Scout camp. David's professional sales career was spent with State Farm Insurance beginning in 1979 until he retired in 2015. He began as an agent; progressing into several leadership positions and ultimately retiring as Vice President of Sales. David exemplified strong leadership skills: the ability to influence others, hard work and moral ethics, and fostering growth in others to develop and realize their full potential.
He led his personal and retirement life much like his profession; always vigorous and disciplined. David and Pamela began hiking together during the summer 2001 with their first trip to Banff National Park. This trip was the beginning of many hiking trips worldwide from the National Parks of the United States to the mountains of Europe. When asked recently about his favorite hike he specifically mentioned the mountains of Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland.
In 2015, David and Pamela relocated to Daniel Island, Charleston, South Carolina. David thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor and social aspects of the Island. He added outdoor cycling and yoga to his fitness routine. Many activities centered around studying and enjoying nature, culminating in his master naturalist designation. When not enjoying the outdoors, time was spent socializing with a bourbon in hand on the porch, cheering on his beloved Buckeyes and dining with friends at the many wonderful restaurants of Charleston.
David took great pride in being a father: attending sporting events, traveling and celebrating milestones with his family. One of David's greatest joys was the birth of his grandson, David Wayne in 2017. When he learned that David would take his namesake he was honored and deeply humbled by the news.
After David's heart surgery and subsequent stroke in 2019, he worked daily to improve his quality of life. It is not an exaggeration to share that every therapist David worked with considered him to be a model patient and an inspiration to others with similar challenges.
David leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Pamela; sons Mark (Lisa) Champ and Stephen Champ, daughter Molly (T.J.) Jagoditz; Grandson David W. Champ. He is also survived by brothers Larry (Linda) Champ, Bob Champ, and Chris (Barbie) Champ; sisters Linda (Carl) Cole, Susan (Tal) Booth, Carol Vetter and Laurie Cawood; mother-in-law, Beverly Box; sisters-in-law Che Sahara and Teresa Schmidt, brother-in-law Chris (Darienne) Box; many nieces and nephews. Both of David's parents Walter and Katherine Champ predeceased him.
While David gave back to many organizations throughout his life, he was most passionate about helping people achieve their dream of home ownership through his service to the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership. He was a Board member from 2007-2012, serving as the Board Chair during the last two years of his term. To honor his memory and passion for INHP's mission, donations can be made online to INHP http://WWW.INHP.ORG/GIVE or by mailing a check to 3550 N. Washington Boulevard, Indianapolis, IN 46205. If moved to celebrate David's life, your donation will create more affordable housing solutions in Indianapolis.Online condolences at www.strawserfuneralhome.com

Dear Pam,

We are so sorry to learn of David´s passing. I remember meeting him at the gym soon after you had moved to Daniel Island. He was quite a dedicated "gym rat" and always had a smile and something funny to say to make my workout time pass more quickly. John and I always enjoyed the time we spent with you and David- lots of laughs were shared. I can only imagine how difficult this time has been. You are in our thoughts and prayers and hope your memories bring you comfort.

I enjoyed working with Dave through his board service at INHP! Dave was a great leader, civic minded and made us a better organization as our board chair during his term of service! Grateful for the opportunity to know him and learn from him.
