David Chaney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2024.
David Harmon Chaney (Dave), born September 23, 1947, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father, John William Chaney; mother, Muriel Day Chaney; and brother, William Gayle Chaney.

Dave is survived by his sister, Susan Chaney Behrens (Bob); his daughters, Angela Chaney Ray (David) and Denise Chaney Hursey (Andy). He was a proud grandfather to Chaney Patout Ray, Lillian Irene Ray, Amelia Elizabeth Hursey, and Samuel Andrew Hursey, niece Troy Chaney Hayes and nephews John and Steven Behrens. He also leaves behind his loyal dog, Roxie, who was a constant companion and frequent passenger on his motorcycle.

A graduate of Istrouma High School and Southeastern University, Dave spent his career at Kaiser Aluminum and Laroche Chemicals. He was an expert marksman and also enjoyed many hobbies over the years including: motorcycles, speed boats, parachute planes, RC airplanes, photography, and many other pursuits that enriched his life.

Dave was deeply committed to his journey of sobriety, celebrating 34 years in Alcoholics Anonymous. He was a source of support and guidance, sponsoring countless individuals in the program and forming life-long friendships along the way. His dedication to helping others was a testament to his belief in the power of the 12 Steps.

The family would like to thank the 3rd floor staff at OLOL and those at St. Joseph hospice, who took such incredible care of him.

A memorial service will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Kristenwood Reception Center, 14025 Greenwell Springs Rd. Food and fellowship to follow until 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local addiction recovery program or St. Joseph hospice in his name.

Rest in peace, Dave. Your legacy of support and strength lives on in the hearts of those you touched.

I was reminded of "Mr. Chaney" recently and decided to look him up to find this obituary. As a young boy growing up in his subdivision, he used to let me sit with him as we played on his Commodore 64 computer. I can't recall how that started, but he was a kind person who actually introduced me to Pink Floyd ("Money" was the first song, if I recall) among other things. I recall going over, knocking on the door, and his wife answered as I meekly asked, "Is Mr. Chaney home?" She smiled at me, presumably because it was an odd thing maybe. I wish I would have reached out sooner to thank him for being kind and sharing common interests. He had an impact on me, even if he didn't know it. He'll be missed. -gk

Sitting at the Celebration today I remembered how you could ask Dave about anything you wanted to know, he would reach into his pocket and pull out a little black book. He would thumb through the pages and come up with an answer. One day I said where did you get that darn book with all the answers. He laughed and said take a look, all the pages were blank. You were a good friend and made me laugh many times. Rest in peace.

I will always appreciate the time I got to spend with Dave when we worked at LaRoche in Gramercy and shared an office and carpooled for a few years. Dave was a great mentor and had a knack for telling you what you needed to hear (not necessarily what you wanted to hear) and doing it in a colorful way that you wouldn't forget.
Miss you Dave, RIP.

Dave was a true inspiration to all who knew him. I first met him many years ago when I played piano for his wedding. Thru the years, our family has shared the program with Dave and other close friends and watched him work tirelessly with folks in need. RIP Dave.
