David Compton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service - Manchester Avenue Chapel - Wabash on Mar. 18, 2026.
David Lowell Compton, 85, of Warren, Indiana, formerly of Somerset, Indiana, died at 12:12 am, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Heritage Pointe in Warren. He was born on June 27, 1940, in Peru, Indiana, to Lowell Compton and Barbara (Bowman) Shively.

David was a 1958 graduate of Peru High School. He married Evelyn Stoops on September 20, 1959, at the Southside Evangelical United Brethren Church in Wabash. They shared a long and devoted life together until her passing on March 23, 2025.

A lifelong entrepreneur, David owned and operated Mississinewa Marine for ten years and also owned Compton Seeds. His commitment to service extended far beyond his work. He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church in Somerset, the Somerset Lions Club, and was a proud year member of the Masonic Lodge in Somerset, LaFontaine, and Wabash.

David dedicated much of his life to his community. He served eight years on the Metropolitan School Board of Wabash and an extraordinary 35 years on the Somerset Town Board. His passion for community involvement was evident in everything he did, and he took great pride in contributing to the place he called home.

He enjoyed boating, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, and taking drives to admire the crops. He was also a sports enthusiast, enjoying golfing and watching Notre Dame football. Above all, David cherished time spent with his family and looked forward to family reunions. He loved to travel to see his grandkids play in their sporting events. His presence, energy, and dedication will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by two daughters, Christina "Christy" Jackson of Albion, Indiana and Cathleen "Cathy" (Steve) Pormen of Granger, Indiana; grandchildren, Alec (Katlin) Pormen of Fishers, Indiana, Evan Pormen of Tampa, Florida, Shane Compton of Texas, Christopher Castle of Columbia City, Indiana, and Brianna Castle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, several great-grandchildren, including Sage Pormen of Fishers, Indiana, Tyler Compton of Bunker Hill, Indiana, and Abby Castle of Columbia City; and his step-brother, Steve Shively of Peru, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Evelyn Ruth Compton.

Memorial services will be 11:00 am, Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, Somerset, with Charlotte Overmyer and Susan Shambaugh officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11:00 am Saturday, March 28, at the church. Burial will be in Mississinewa Cemetery, Somerset. Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service is handling arrangements.

Preferred memorial is Wabash County Cancer Society or the Animal Shelter of Wabash County.
