Dr. Crotty was my calculus teacher at King's, when I was age 18/19. As it turned out, I failed his class, but before I did, I was able to solve, off the top of my head, one of the more challenging questions he asked---and believe me, he was CHALLENGING, brutal, demanding. But it was after he failed me in Calculus that year, giving me a D, that he made me who I am today. He told me, in his own way, that 'you have such a vast understanding of the abstract, yet you cannot....or maybe, will not...provide me an acceptable definition for a log function."
Perhaps it was his astonishing disappointment in me that lit a fire under me.
I have often wanted to write to him, telling him I re-took Calculus, at Wilkes, the next semester, and attained a B. And that it was a music teacher who was the professor of that class at Wilkes that allowed me the perspective I needed to 'see' what calculus was...how beautiful it could be...how much it means to us, as humans.
It's been over 20 years since I've been in Dr. Crotty's class, where he criticized me, in particular, for only acquiring a 7/25 on a quiz. But it was that type of insult that my soul needed to excel; when I got mad, I accomplished what God intended me to accomplish.
Currently, I am many things. I have worked as an English teacher in the Mari-El Republic of Russia; as an Assistant Refuge Manager on the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge in Tallulah, Louisiana; as a biologist for the USGS, on the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta of Alaska; as a Howard Hughes Grant funded scholar, allowed to work on Master's research as a sophomore in college at Oregon State University in moleular genetics; as a K-12 Biology educator; an MBA with an emphasis in IT Management; as a PhD in Psychology, with an emphasis in Cognition....and, most importantly, as a mother of five children, all of whom were homeschooled. My oldest son was earning A's at Harvard at age 16 in Computer Science and Political Philosophy, and my younger children are equally as brilliant and promising.
I remember Dr. Crotty telling us, at King's, "Well, you're all not good enough for the Ivy Leagues, but I suppose you'll do," in that Bostonian accent he had. I regret not having the opportunity to personaly thank him....thank him for everything. He was more inspiring, to me, than any family member. And I will always hold him, very dear, in my heart. Even though he could not pronounce the letter 'R'....and was so very proud of that! :) May he rest in Peace; God has one of his angels home.

My most deepest condolences to Patricia Crotty and family for the loss of your loved one.
I wish I can know how I can contact you.
I am Frances from Guam. I am now working at Kings College Business Office in wilkes barre and still here for 22 years. I worked for you at the NEPA Environmental Council; I was your secretary and we became good friends. We lost touch.
May you and your family be comforted that Dave is now in a place where he is no longer suffering.
God bless everyone,
Your friend,
Frances
