David Ray "Spiz" Franklin, age 74, passed away August 8, 2024, at his home in Clay, Kentucky. He was born on December 5, 1949 to the late Geneve (Brown) and James Hugh (Dick) Franklin. After graduating from Webster County High School in Dixon, Kentucky, David bravely volunteered to serve his country as a member of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
After his honorable discharge from United States Air Force, David made a career as a welder and worked at local companies including Island Creek Mines and Custom Engineering in Clay, Kentucky, where he retired in the early 2010s. David was a member of Living Faith Christian Center in Wheatcroft.
An avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, David spent nearly his entire life in Webster County. His friends, far too many to count, fondly knew him by the nickname "Spiz."
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Terry Franklin. He is survived by his wife, Karla Franklin of Clay, Kentucky; big brother Robert "Bob" Franklin and sister-in-law Karen Franklin of Eddyville, Kentucky; his children, Coltin Franklin and partner Aisha Sefiyaoui of Hooksett, New Hampshire, Jeremiah "Rowdy" Franklin of Murray, Kentucky, Chessa Franklin of Clay, Kentucky, and Parker Franklin and wife Emily Johnson of Henderson, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Will and Levi Franklin of Clay, Kentucky; and his loyal and faithful dog, Sally Franklin of Clay, Kentucky.
David will be sorely missed for his sense of humor, unbelievable way of cooking biscuits and gravy on a campfire, dedication to family and community, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of others.
Funeral services will be Monday, August 12, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Vanover Funeral Home in Clay with Brother Rick Oakley and Pastor Karen Franklin. Burial will be in New Clay Cemetery in Clay. Visitation will be Monday 11:00 AM till service time at the funeral home.
