David Galaher Obituary

Galaher, David Jr.

of St. Petersburg, died February 3, 2026. David was born on January 22, 1937 to Sarah Meyer, a strong-willed lifelong Floridian, and David Galaher Sr, a kind-hearted British engineer. They spent their early years as a family along the Anclote River prior to building a home in St. Petersburg - the same home where David would later raise a family of his own. He attended Boca Ciega High School and was a member of the school's inaugural graduating class.

David went on to study English and play football at The University of The South. He waxed poetic about his time at Sewanee. Ever the purveyor of mischief, his stories were often of epic pranks done alongside his brothers of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order.

From a young age, David was a voracious reader, leading him to a career in academia. After receiving his Masters in English Education and working on his doctorate degree at Florida State University, he taught literature and film criticism for many decades. Students were lucky to have a seat in his classroom, a place where each person's thoughts had merit, hard work was expected, and imaginations wandered.

David knew no strangers. He had a heart for everyone, especially his girls: his devoted wife of 62 years, Melinda Galaher; two daughters, Katherine Galaher (Cam Mitchell) and Julia Connett (Sean); and three granddaughters, Mary-Margaret "Molly" Hellier, Allison Hellier, and Sarah Katherine Cornide. Being "Granddaddy" was his greatest joy.

David will be remembered for his keen wit, ability to turn a phrase, and place as a beloved fixture at Harvey's Fourth Street Grill. He led a life rich in love, laughter, and desserts. David will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to experience his magic.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 1800 12th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33704 on Tuesday, February 17 at 10 am.

Professor Galaher was my instructor at SPJC for Honors Composition I and II and Motion Picture Criticism from 1990-1991. His way of engaging the class with discussion, humor, and humanity was refreshing and encouraging. He was a foundational inspiration for my further study of writing and communication and even led to my teaching those subjects for a time.

I extend my condolences to Professor Galaher´s family because his passing is surely difficult and dispiriting; however, I also would like to offer a small token of hope in sharing how Professor Galaher´s life gave meaning and motivation to others. His legacy is unforgettable.

Dear Mr. Galaher,

You were hands down my favorite teacher ever. I only had one class with you in 1977, but you left such an imprint. Wit, wisdom, and occasional snark.

Many years later I had the wonderful surprise of running into you at the Wharf in Pass-A-Grille enjoying refreshment with your cycling friend.

Rest in precious peace.

My deepest condolences to your loving family and friends.
