David Lyle Hassel, 83, of Avon, passed away Friday, May23, 2025, at Western Reserve Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake, Ohio. Born on May 17, 1942, in Elyria, OH to Earl and Clara Hassel. He attended Avon Lake High School, served in the United States Army, and married his loving wife Barbara on April 18, 1964.They began their life in Avon Lake and later moved to Avon to raise their four children. David was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying boating and fishing in the Great Lakes for walleye, perch, and salmon, as well as hunting with his great friends at their cabins in Pennsylvania and with his son and daughters locally in Ohio. His granddaughters affectionately referred to him as Captain Grandpa which always brought a smile to his face! He enjoyed many summers at the family cottage that he helped build on Pelee Island and later cross-country road trips with Barbara to visit family and friends. In recent years, David shared his love of wildlife and the outdoors with his neighbors and friends at the Rose Senior Villas in Avon. David enjoyed working as an auto mechanic in the Army and then went on to work at General Motors for 30+ years while he continued to repair cars and boats for friends and family on the side.
David is survived by his children: Susan L. (Carl) Huber of N. Ridgeville, OH, Michael D. (Kelly) Hassel of Chino Hills, CA, Diane M. Britton of Anchorage, AK, Rani E. (Geoff) Ristau of Syracuse, NY; grandchildren: Samantha, Jack,& Ryan Hassel; Dillon (Jessica) & Dakota Matson, Darlene (Corey) Godwin; and Kaleigh & Jordan Ristau; great granddaughters; Andrea Van Hout & Kyrie Myrvold; step-grandchildren: Chaz R. Huber & Kimberly Ann Huber; brother: Mark (Jeanne) Hassel; sisters: Connie Riedel, Kathy Urig, and Marcia Hassel: his Brothers-in-law Jeffrey K. (Connie)Lee, Ed Virant; sisters-in-law: Mary Ann Hassel, Joanne Lee, Donna Hassel and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by: His loving wife Barbara E. Hassel, parents: Earl & Clara Hassel; his granddaughter: Denise Matson; and siblings: Alberta Hassel, Dick Hassel, Marie Virant, and James Hassel.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 2nd, 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 32929 Lake Rd., Avon Lake, OH 44012, with a luncheon immediately following in the Church Hall.
Memorial contributions in memory of David Hassel may be made to the Ames Family Hospice House, Westlake OH; online at: hospicewr.org– choose: "Ways To Give" then choose "Make a Memorial or Honor Gift". For "Gift Use" choose Ames Family Hospice House.
